does the edge have a strip of brown, or is it all white/grey?

it is a proof
if it is silver the edge will look all silver like a regular pre 1964 silver coin
if it is clad like post 1964 dimes it will have 2 layers of color on the rim
compare it to another dime from 1965-present
if it has 2 layers like those ones it isn't silver and might be worth about a buck to a collector
if it is silver it might be worth about 4 bucks or whatever silver value is at the time of sale

The edge is completely white/gray. So that means it's a proof dime made in silver in 2000? Cool. Thanks.

I am yet to get my hands on a silver proof
I found a 1962 silver proof but I dont count that because all 62s were silver

The "s" mint mark was used only for proofs in this year.

Quick question that is related, without looking at the edge, how can one tell if a S mint proof coin is silver or not? (example, an un-graded 2010-S dime for sale on ebay)

Is it anyone's guess unless you look at the edge?

I doubt it will work over the internet, so you are at the mercy of the seller in that case because there is no way to tell the difference without weight or looking at the edge that I know of.

Sorry, I somehow lost the context!

It may also be my bias; I always buy a coin in hand, never from a photo.

Sorry guys and gals, let me clarify. I see all sorts of 2010-S dimes on ebay...some for just above the melt value of a silver dime. Good deal, right? Well, if it's a clad dime...maybe not as much of a good deal as you thought. What if the seller doesn't specify if it's clad or not...does the photo show if it's silver? Some may think that ALL San Francisco mint mark proofs are silver...well, are they? If they aren't how can one tell based on a photo?

(For the record, some of us don't have the option of buying coins "in hand." I don't get to the states all that often.)

I understand. I was only admitting my bias and not trying to say it was a better way to do it. I apologize if I implied otherwise.

You cannot.

In my opinion, if someone is deliberately not mentioning that they are clad, they are also deliberately preventing the coin from showing it. That is, there are no shots of the edge and the colour balance is set to show more white than gray.

As I said in this case you are at the mercy of the seller to tell you if its silver or clad, there is no way to tell by a photo

jbuck, no hurt feelings here! Thanks anyways. :)

If I had the option, I'd pop in coins stores and flea markets all day long...alas, I'm happy to scrounge up an out of circulation peso of decent caliber every now and then.

jbuck & bryan, Thanks for clearing that up. That means all the "just above melt" proofs are from sellers that are probably hoping to sucker someone into thinking it's silver, when it's not. Good information!
