With $20 I'd pick a Walking Liberty half for the reasons already mentioned... it's a nice size and a beautiful design. |

Depending on what high school or college you two attended, I would lean toward a commemorative coin or token from that school. Many of my friends say they admire my collection but none have been moved to collecting as I have. I'd also explore a sports memorabilia token. My wife never did understand my love of coin collecting but one thing she found for my birthday that really hit the mark; a block of Lucite containing piece of the original stadium brick from Notre Dame Stadium when Knute Rocknee coached. It wasn't the Walker I wanted but man did she score a touchdown that day. |

Okay this is for a potential new collector. I know the first set I started was NOT Walkers, or Mercurys, or Franklins, or Buffalos. It was Lincoln cents and I think most collectors have a set of these. I would get them a nice 1909 VDB.

A 2-cent coin. Obviously it would have to be a lower grade but for $20 you could get a respectable 2-cent coin. A nice old coin that is always a conversation piece since they haven't made 2-cent coins in over 100 years and were short lived.

Yeah, the WLH is a great start, but I actually got my barber a 1911-S dime for about $10 that absolutely floored him. Reason I got him that (for a tip - he owns the shop, and it's weird to me to tip the owner of the shop) was that a) it was exactly 50 years older than his family has been in the US, b) it probably paid for a nice haircut and shave in 1911, and c), it was designed by Charles Barber. Anyway, I'm a fan of a nice old dime and a Red Book... =) |

I second the 2 and 3 cent coins. They are odd denominations and are very cool and interesting.

Kind of did that for my 11 year old who is fascinated with Spain. We picked up a little, very worn 1708 spanish cob ($7) and a 1878 Spanish silver coin ($14) that have gotten him hooked!

Love the replies and ideas everyone...keep 'em coming! I think I'm still headed toward WLH, but I really like the old large cents, 2 & 3 cents, etc.
