The PCGS link I posted, while not a member's 60/61, still demonstrates actual coins graded 60/61 by PCGS.

Yes, I know, I'm not interested in that as their examples are mediocre at best and they only show 1 example. You need to look at many examples to get an idea of the variables. Thanks, mshev.

None here either but take a look at http://coins.shop.ebay.com/i.html?_...md=1&_ipg=50 for some NGC MS60's on ebay and http://coins.shop.ebay.com/i.html?_...md=1&_ipg=50 for some PCGS MS60's. Should give you quite a wide variance.

I don't think you folks are understanding the point of this thread! I have been colecting Morgans since 1968 and have seen thousands of examples of MS60/61's. I thought if we could get some posts up of Forum members examples we could discuss and use for future reference when grading. I don't consider myself the ultimate coin grader but I've seen and graded my share.I have though witnessed many coins posted here that folks have graded 60 or 61 only referencing nicks in the field or on the face never mentioning their thoughts on the coins Luster or Strike which are the biggest factor in giving a Morgan its grade...myself included. anyways...anyone have any examples that they can post, not links to other sites? Thanks again..

The problem we face, 1893S (and I say we because I'm having the same trouble while soliciting images from forum members) is that people generally don't collect them. I'm going to have to loot Heritage for MS60-61, I think.

Yeah, Thanks Dave...I think this would help us all in understanding MS grading. When I see a persons coin graded MS60/61 I wonder how they/we come up with this grade as bagmarks alone will not give you this. Up until about 1980, + or - a few years we considered all BU coins(MS60-to about MS64) as MS60, unless they were Gems, and then we considered them MS65. With this being said, I am really interested in an MS60 grade. I suppose only Key Dates are submitted for grading in what is considered MS60 condition as to get above the AU grade.

Honestly, man, MS61 fascinates me. MS60 is a kind of default - "It's Uncirculated, but FUGLY - and MS62 can be an MS63 wannabee. But MS61? Tough. In my opinion, the toughest grade to achieve.

Also Dave, I guarantee you that if any of us on the Forum had lots of $$$ and we hade the opportunity to buy an MS60 graded Key Date Morgan instead of an AU and without the possibility of aquiring any grade higher we would do it in a minute!

1893S: I post a bunch of links for you. Most MS60 graded coins are "details" grades but I'll sort those out and list some problem free pieces. You will likely need a Teletrade and Heritage membership to view the close-up images but this should help.

Here you go. I picked 1900 and 1921 for examples.

The realized price on this Teletrade auction just kills me. $15 for a Mint State PCGS slabbed Morgan! It was only 4 1/2 years ago!

I think the problem is most Morgans just aren't worth the grading fee in MS-60 and I think getting a real MS-60 is just about as tough as getting a AU-58. Either they have to much wear and it makes them an AU-55 or its at least a MS-61 or 62 and not MS-60

I do have one pcgs ms 61 and it's at the bank. The main thing you would notice on the 61 VS 62 and up is..... the amount of hits on the obverse (61/62).

The hits (for a lack of better term) are on the cheek / neck area / in front of the face and some have a decent size gouge as well, either on the obverse or reverse. All these features are visible to the naked eye (no magnification needed).

To circle back to your question I have never seen a ms 60 in a slab. There are plenty of 58's about and it's a very interesting observation on your part.

Here are a couple. I have been called out on this board a couple times for suggesting coins are in the ms60-62 range, but I think they are more common than people think. Some people seem to grade any coin with excessive bag marks as MS63 by default, when in reality they may grade lower. A lot of people post pictures here and the responses help them determine whether or not to send a coin in for grading, so an accurate assessment is pretty important.

The first one from PGCS. This one has a decent strike and good luster, but lots of bag marks.

Here's one from ANACS. This one I feel is undergraded. It has some toning which kills the luster. This is the only reason I can see that they graded it this low.

Also note the reverse of the first one is pretty nice. It would likely grade MS63 if you were grading it on your own, but it just goes to show that the reverse doesn't matter much unless there's a problem.
