I had never heard of anyone doing that until I read this post.

I do hoard such coins as 1964 JFK's, Lincoln Cents, and anything dated 1942, which is my birth year.

That would be like putting all your eggs in one basket, wouldn't it? My problem, for years, was concentrating on EVERYTHING at one time. Guess it was great when I had the extra cash but not any more. Still working with the silver euro, euro circulating commemoratives, other world silver and U.S. Buffalo nickels!!! While I am still attracted to many U.S. series I must refrain until things pick up financially. Still buy an Eagle now and then to keep the silver coming in!!!

All I can say to that is AHHHHHHHHHHHHH
WAy back when they first came out myself and a friend also save those dumb things. My friend ended up not long ago with several thousand dollars worth of them. I did not have that many. Note I mentioned in the past tense. We noted not long ago a coin shows there was no market for them. They are a drug on the market for resale. No one at a coin show would buy them for more than a Quarter. So we both ended up taking them ALL to a bank and poof, they are now in your collection probably.

I would collect just the varieties of 1794 Large Cents if I could afford it, but that's not gonna happen anytime soon.

I tried to stay on buff nickels but then I was diverted to merc dimes and then Walking Liberty halves and now 2.50 gold indians(still saving up for one so I have 50.00 just for the 1908) but now I just collect anything that interests me like toned 1921 morgans for example

The same date and design, what kind of empire building is that? It would be like Pizzaro conquering Peru over and over and over again.

I can't even collect a series with different dates and mintmarks. There's just something about seeing the same designs over and over again that never did quite jell with me. Guess that's why someone invented Type Collecting.

Type collecting is a GREAT way to start the hobby but, as I said, I got interested in so many TYPES that my collecting ballooned into everything. Now I, after all these years, have sold off a great part of my collection and concentrate on the Buffalo nickel and silver. The darn Buffalo nickel is getting pretty pricy now but still worth the hunt!

You know I'd love to read something from a retired coin dealer about what they really think about coin collectors. Some true confession here. I bet we must drive them crazy. One minute everyone wants a particular date or design and the next minute we're all over the map wanting everything. Coin collectors? Coin collectors?

I have to admit I was a hard core morgan collector and never even looked at other series with interest of collecting for awhile, now that I started the dansco 7070 I am having alot more fun looking for "nice" examples for the type album than I ever had looking for high grade Morgans

My primary collection is Australian $1 coins. Initially I wanted to get a BU of each year. I thought the best way was to buy a roll of that year. Of course that gave me 20 which I dutifully put in 2x2s and then into an appropriate plastic sheet. Result? A crazy affliction of having to collect 20 coins to a page. I now have 20 of most of the Australian $1. There are a few obvious exceptions, e.g., the Victoria Cross $1 ($200+). But I'm young and there is still time.

I have also started collecting BU from all the other denominations. This time around I'm far more selective in what I keep from the rolls. I reckon most of my 2005 and 2006 coins are now all choice unc or gem. I put even the smallest bag mark back into circulation.

Then I keep all errors that I find.

Unfortunately, the Royal Australian Mint is creating a huge range of NCLT $1 coins. I'm now seriously having to curtail my collecting habits. Soon

I buy whatever I like and can afford. With an emphasis on afford. I have a good many 3CN, but can not afford the few that I don't have. With that being said, I do also collect dimes. Barber or Mercury, they are the majority of my collection.
