Hate to be sexist, I think mostly women wear the coin necklaces, it looks fru-fru on a man, oddly artificial and affected. If you do get a used Eagle, the Liberty $10 is more traditional and seen more often as ex-jewelry than the Indian $10.
If you live or visit a large inner-city, expect such an item to be ripped off your neck in a snatch & grab. Best leave such items in a home safe or bank safe deposit box, and enjoyed in the privacy of your own home. My .02c...

I don;t think its fru fru. For me I am wanting to do a $10 or $20 gold coin. Yes, I know that could be anywhere from $1500-$3000 on my neck depending on the chain. I also don;t plan to wear it outside my shirt though.

What would be the point of not displaying your jewelry, and ruining a perfectly good gold coin with corrosive skin oils?

I'll tell you why coin jewelry is a real crying shame: I inherited a gold bracelet from my grandmother. She loved this item with the 10 Indian quarter eagles with a passion. Seven, count 'em, seven of the coins were 1911Ds with the balance being plain 1911s. 1911 was the year she got married. They WERE collectible coins prior to having them soldered together in 1924... They would be worth in excess of $4k each in AU today if she had merely saved them. As it is, the entire piece was worth only melt since much of central detail on the reverse was worn away but not the edge where the bezel protected the coin. I agree that one should be able to do whatever with one's own property, future owners/inheritors might not be so thankful or gracious. Using a coin for jewelry is in effect defacing it, worse than cleaning it to death. I expect this from the general public, but NOT from educated numismatists. I despise coin jewelry. To each his own, indeed.

Yeah I would agree that defacing a great coin by putting it in a piece of jewelry maybe crazy but who really cares about bulk bullion coins, i.e. panda, age, etc? My panda has probably been in this necklace for most of it's 15 year life and I'm sure I could still sell it at a premium on ebay. I thought twice about putting a $10 Indian in the bezel and decided not to ruin the Indian I just bought. I guess it boils down to the fact I like the look, like a gold presidential Rolex it is just beautiful to me.

You could get the coin enameled, but bye-bye value. Maybe you could stick one into a pocket watch and flip it open whenever you want to see your coin.

Sorry to be so harsh earlier, TBK, I take it back, not ALL coin jewelry is awful. I just couldn't do a necklace, even as nice as the one you picked up. It would be a nice gift for your partner or GF... Anyway if you want to have a coin to enjoy on your person, might I suggest a money clip with a $20 Liberty Double Eagle? I got an ex-jewelry coin that was in F-VF for about melt 5 years ago that I had made into a money clip. The funny thing is that practically no one gives it a second look when I pull bills off it, because most people think it's electroplated fake gold, since few people have ever seen the real thing. I know it's real, since there are file marks on the reverse (hidden) side. Cheers!

Well, it only took two months but I got it. I ended up paying $770 at my local flea market. It has definitely been cleaned and it has a few minor nicks so in a word it is "perfect" as a piece of jewelry, it will look great in my necklace. I will post a picture of the final product when my jeweler finishes it on Tuesday. If anyone wants a deal on a 1/2oz Panda let me know.

Wonder how long that would last with either coin on 63rd and Cottage Grove in Chicago, day or night.

Just sold the Panda for $900 at my local coin shop but that included the bezel. I am waiting on a nice bezel from ebay and then i'll post a picture of the finished product when it is completed.

I'm looking for about the same thing. I don;t want to buy a coin and put it in a bezel. I kind of feel bad "ruining" (if you'd say that) a coin, but then on the other hand, most of these coin are selling for right around melt value anyway so why does it matter what you do? I am hunting for 1 already in a bezel
