Which grading service is honest and reliable?

PCGS, NGC, ANACS, ICG and to a lesser extent SEGS. All are honest; some more reliable in terms of accuracy than others. No other "alphabet" grading companies can be considered legitimate, among those still operating.

If I were you, I wouldn't buy ANYTHING in any slab other than a PCGS or NGC. I do make exception for ANACS coins if they warrant it.

When the time comes that you feel comfortable grading the coin yourself, then you should 'buy the coin' and not 'buy the slab.'

The basement slabbers are notorious for overgrading, most of the time severely.

I agree both of the names you mentioned are both self slabbers and not a real TPG. The ones SuperDave mentioned is the only real Third Party Graders that is recognized in the hobby

Thanks for all the feedback. I agree that you should "buy the coin not the slab". Unfortunately with the number of fakes coming out of China I want to be sure I get the real thing. I'm not skilled enough to pick out all of these fakes

I only own a few slabs, coins I got from ebay in 1998, and they are ANACS - what would make those a problem, just that ANACS doesn't have as good a reputation as PCGS, NGC? Are they considered more accurate than ANACS, more reliable gradings?

I believe it is just pcgs and ngc brings more money when sold because most collectors believe these twos grading is stricter than the others. It to me is all according to what you are wanting to do with the coin, if it is for resale you would probably want to send coins in to pcgs and ngc but if you just want the protection a slab offers for the coins in your collection anacs has no club joining fee and they are still a respectable grading company

Thanks Bryan, appreciate the response. By the bye, are you the first CCF member that will reach 10K posts? WOW, that's a lot of typing!

Well I am in the lead as of right now so I just may be the first if everything keeps going as it has since I joined the forum. I may have 5 or 6 quality posts though

Unfortunately the fakes coming out of China includes fake slabs from the reputable grading services as well.

Another reputable one specializes in Canadian. I think it's ICCS, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Here's a site worth looking into for fake slabs. Gives you pretty good details on what to be aware of for counterfeit slabs. Hope this helps.
