I pay all of my utility bills with cash at the Post Office, which is next door to the bank. I may draw over $1000 in cash from the bank, but I never carry much cash. I spend the bulk of my cash withdrawn immediately, to pay utility bills.
I budget what I need to spend before going to the bank, and as a result, have saved squillions over decades with habitual budgeting.
I was forced into budgeting originally, because I could see the advantages of paying my mortgage off early, by paying more. Took 10 years to fully own our house, funded from a single income only, and saved a huge amount of interest by paying the house off early.
Very large purchases such as cars, are bought with a bank check.
I have no need for credit cards.
If I want to travel overseas, I set up a debit account, specifically for that purpose, and close it on my return home.

CPC24, "the lower class and immigrants" give us a break! Poor implication in my opinion.

Quote: all the money I have is locked away in a safe in the middle of the pacific. I wondered who's ship that was keeping me awake chugging by night and day... On topic: I am one of those people that rarely ever have any cash on them and I boycott any business that penalizes me for using plastic, with their evil service charges/transaction fees (cough ARCO cough). I pay all my bills with online banking, greatest thing ever conceived. Even those that the bank has to mail out a check every month because they don't have the ability to accept electronic payments.

Effective next year, SSI and other gubmint transfer payments will only be made by direct deposit. Faster, much harder to steal, cheaper, etc. Don't believe in banks? Deal with it.

Quote: I have written around 6 checks in the last few months I have probably not written that many in the last ten years. Do I even know where my checkbook is? I am paid and all of my bills are paid electronically. With the exception of two accounts, all are automatically paid as well. For what it is worth, I do not keep all of my eggs in one basket.

I pay a few of my monthly bills with checks, and there is one local coin shop here that takes checks (but not plastic). So, I probably write 5-7 checks a month, at a guess.
There are a few places left that don't take plastic or checks (if you want a hot dog from the snack bar at Costco, better have cash), and I personally prefer to use cash for purchases less than $2. So, while cash is definitely used less than it once was, it isn't going away soon.
Cash is also much better for "informal" transactions between friends. For example, we have a water cooler here at the office. One of my co-workers pays the company that owns the cooler for refills, and several of us give him $5 a month to contribute to the costs. It would be pretty hard to do that with any other method than cash.

I find it so ironic how coin collectors don't like using cash.. Lol.. I use cash for everything I can.. If I had a bank account.. (Don't yet will soon, though), I'd just keep the minimum amount in it to pay my bills.. You can't find valuable varieties in change if you pay with a card.. That's just the way I see it..

From what I understand, the U.S. $100 bill is one of the most widely used (and counterfeited), and recognized, articles of currency in the world.
Ol' Ben gets around.

Quote: I find it so ironic how coin collectors don't like using cash.. Lol.. It is not that I do not like using cash, I do because I still like to search my change. One thing is that I have a natural tendency to be efficient, hence the electronic payments for my bills; which would have been paid with a check, not cash. Another thing is that I am finding fewer places enjoy taking my cash; I get that look from them, as if making change is so difficult. So I play with plastic and they do not have to think much about it.

It's either that or they want to start getting those Dollar Coins circulating.

If they want those dollar coins to circulate, they need to completely stop printing and distributing the dollar notes.

Sorry to have attempted to steal you thunder Changeless on posting a similar article in the PM section so to speak, but it just goes to show great minds think alike perhaps, rof .... I did not see this thread, as I am not sure what section it is even in? Quick mod note. I noticed when someone posts a link in another section from this forum, when you click on it and scroll to the top of the page, it has the author's name and title but I can't find a section listing, am I just missing it? And back on point, as one fellow I work with who is going to school to become an investment banker says...."What are we gonna use for a new currency, as it can't be silver or gold." There is no where close to enough platinum for example and I know that would never happen. What could the gov or world perhaps make a new source of plentiful coin based currency, which is not to valuable like gold, but not worthless like paper, perhaps a fine medium? Maybe DuPont could make it out of new high dollar polymers and plastics, lol....

It should be just above the thread title, just down from the "What's in your pocket?" logo

Now's not a bad time to get the dollar coins circulating, as Lincoln is out now. I think they were waiting for enough recognizable presidents to be minted so that they could be accepted more readily. My guess...
Why don't they just put Washington as the main design already and make it look like a $1 bill? Something to do with Sacagewea and some law?
