A few personal Great White stories from there: - When I worked for a marine mammal hospital, we would see a lot of seals with Great White bites. If they weren't too deep, the seals would heal up pretty well. After recovery, one of our patients was released at the Farallones islands, a seal breeding ground, which not coincidentally is also a Great White feeding ground. Just as the seal was released into the ocean, a Great White appeared from nowhere and grabbed the seal. Sometimes nature has other plans.
- Several years back, a friend and I went swimming out to end of the pier in San Luis Obispo. It was a 200 meter swim, and we thought nothing of the risk, until a week later when a lady was attacked by a Great White in the very same place. Unlike the "Jaws" movies, where the shark nibbled at its victims and slowly pulled them under, Great Whites usually stage fast and powerful attacks. Lurking about 20 meters below the surface, they silently wait for a silhouette that resembles food. When they spot their prey, they spring into action, hitting their target with the force of their bodies and jaws, often breaching the surface in their attack. This is why swimmers and surfers are attacked--they resemble the outline of their primary food: seals and sea lions.

Fascinating Stories..... I think you didnt go swimming at that place again. I can go as far as touching it while I'm on a boat and it is in the water .... but I think it needs a lot of courage (and a little bit insanity) to be with it in the water even if I will be in a cage as some people do  |

For the most part, swimming at California beaches is very safe. The lady who was killed made a bad choice by choosing to swim around a group of seals. Sharks follow seals and wait to pick off the weak ones. A human in a wetsuit will resemble a slow, weak seal. Unfortunately, she was in the wrong place at the wrong time.  I have never seen a shark in all my years of swimming/surfing/kayaking on the open sea--I consider myself lucky. |

Hi Monedas  Adding Gold coins would be a bonus but it will be very expensive for me to add all gold coins with Great White so I prefer limiting this collection to silver and other non precious metals. The shark on the mermaid coin is not a Great White .... but still its a beautiful coin .... The Canada coin is a beauty and it is on my fishing list .... hope I could add it someday ..... thanks for the links |

Never thought there were so many white sharks swimming out there in coins! and everytime they appear, it seems they bite a big chunk out of one's wallet! LOL! a golden bite! I had thought it was only eagles all over the world. and the pic on teeth, jaws and fossil giant tooth is amazing!  Thanks for the pics!  |
