So...I wonder if someone at the mint stamped those backwards Ps? It would be the sort of tool a mint might have for using on a die.

it's a good thing there isn't a hole in my 7070 Dansco for this coin...I couldn't afford it!

This piece has been listed in Judd since at least the fifth edition (earliest one I have) and probably before that. The P's and platina engraving were almost certainly done at the mint to make sure it wasn't mistaken for a normal silver coin.

This was once our coin. It was part of the world's finest NGC 1814 that was broken up a couple of years back. This coin has traded hands a couple of times, each time for over $65,000. We managed to get back the 1814 MS-66 Dime that was once paired with this coin last week at the Baltimore show. Here it is.... http://www.icollector.com/item.aspx?i=12308460

How would the backwards P get on there? I'm thinking it's either a standard letter punch that was stamped into the die, or a reversed die letter punch that was stamped right on the coin itself.

Ummm, for the record, isn't a backwards "P" also known as a "b" Maybe "Bob" (the sweaty laborer at the mint) merely stamped a whole bunch of b's on the coin in an attempt to claim it as his own!

Wow - I read all the posts and am 'not getting it' with respect to the value of this coin. Some of the early responses were 'why would someone ruin the coin' but then later we find that this coin has huge value and everyone wants to own it.
I'm still stuck at square one - someone stamped a lot of P's on a coin and it was struck in platinum. I'll take on the devils advocate role - isn't it simply a 'novelty' coin?
OK, let's be honest. If you knew nothing about the current value of this coin and someone offered to sell it to you for $1000 - would you buy it? I'd only pay the value of platinum in the coin.
Just my opinion of course...

Much more big money in coins these days, an no doubt it would bring a hefty price today, even in this bad economy. Just to be a pure platinum coin from 1814 is astonishing to me to begin with, what a gem!
With the value of platinum and the rare history tied into it, no doubt some big money would pay way beyond estimated value knowing it would be their ONLY chance to ever get one. And to just to have that bragging rights over their millionaire buddies who missed out on this great coin....
