I collect small cent varieties and nickel dollar varieties in the highest possible grades. Most finds are in TPG holders, but rarely is the variety attributed. I guess it is the thrill of the hunt that makes it fun...

I collect most of the common varieties,I don't get to bent o having all, saves a ton of money.I actually have never graded my Victorian for the obverse type. When I retire I can have fun finding whats there. But then you start wanting to get them as well.I always admire people that can draw the line.

Zonad, that Provincial brockage is outstanding! Any idea if it is New Brunswick or Nova Scotia?

No R, I only hope some day a provincial expert will weigh in. Is there a difference?

Varieties are as important as I can afford
Many are out of reach even if one can recognize them
I doubt that I'll ever own three varieites of 1885 25cents in VF or better

1885 25 cent varieties are very difficult.

I've managed to rescue two 1885 25c 5/3s so far, unlabeled, one from a US dealer, another from an eccentric Canadian dealer...both in VG10-F12...
I haven't been around very long, but they seem extremely rare. I suspect only one 1885 5/3 has sold on Heritage Auctions archive in the last 10 years, it may have been EF.

I've rescued one 1885 straight 5 as well, in VG...

What excites me though is rescuing a whole bunch of 1872 25c varieties, some in EF-AU, that no one seems to know exist, or no one cares to collect. To top it off, I've gotten them at 50-70% off trends of the regular 1872, which is bountiful. Now that's sweet :)...

The only variety that I find REALLY expensive is the 1858/1558 dime

...then there's the really tough ones like the 1859 9/6 cent, 1881 single serif N...haven't seen one yet :).

Have you tried to post it in other sections of this forum? I'm sure there is someone here who can decipher the berries to help you narrow it down.

PCGS called it a Canadian provincial brockage. Is that good enough? Would you like to do the detective work? I will send photos to you if you like.

If I find them when I buy them. Off center especially or with brockage. But I don't want to spend a lot. I guess my favorites are the 1872 a/v halves and the 1964 EWL nickels. The 1964 can easily be overlooked if your not looking for it, meaning you can get them cheap.
