I think it's was done with a hammer. It was not done at mint 100% sure.

if it was done with a hammer the reverse would show damage as well.

Mike Diamond is the one most experts turn to for answers when it comes to error coins so the chance is pretty good that if he says its a mint error, its a mint error. Even though I think what he see's is the C from CENT instead of the O from ONE, because I can see the E from one next to the crescent shape and the C is where it looks like the C in CENT would be. But it may be my eyes playing tricks on me and he is correct. Either way one heck of a find from circulation

The OP's coin is a legitimate mint error. To show the difference between that and a garage job, I've showing the one I got taken on a while ago. Notice how the damage shows on the obverse. The OP's has no such damage.

I have read many threads that peroxide bath, distilled water for final rinse, air dry, and natural oils are an acceptable method before sleeving the coin for storage to preserve for years. Was I wrong and messed up? I can take the beating.

I don't think you should have cleaned it. It looks alot darker and oily now, (cleaned).

Being new to this it's an education. First pics posted were from a scanner, second set digital camera. Yes it did become darker. Guess maybe when my son becomes 30 years old it will have lighten up a bit. Live and learn I guess.
Thanks everyone

I don't know exactly how much it will affect your coin but on some (especially silver or high grade coppers) any kind of cleaning can devalue it by as much as 80% or more. Hairlines from cleaning cloths and residue from products can kill the premium.

not sure why you decided to do anything to the coin but that should never ever happen. As stated above I am not sure how it effects the coin as I have never heard of this treatment but I can tell you that I wish you would have asked in here before doing anything to the coin because it needed nothing. The only reason to ever do anything to a coin is if there are verdigris that can harm the coin if left on there, but this one had no problems at all and can decrease the value by a HUGE amount and in some cases make a valuable find worth nothing but face value. I don't know where you read that this was acceptable but I sure hope it wasn't a coin site, because a coin should never be cleaned unless there is no other way to save it from future damage. The chances of it ever lightning up is never going to happen, no matter how long you wait. Your son could be 130 and it would still be dark if not darker from the treatment you applied to the coin

Yes did mess up. But was honest about it. Only reason was under the microscope did show verdigris in my opinion. But I am still new and have no expertise in this. Reading around the web on those methods led me to believe it was acceptable. Do have coins that have gone rotton so I was only trying to preserve. Count on it never happing again. Thought I would pull it from the album and post pics from the scanner instead of the digital camera. My camera makes things look different in color. doesn't look as dark, but it is darker. Thanks everyone
