On the rare occasion that I have mailed coins overseas I just put "tokens" on the form.

Most postal employees have no idea what numismatic means.

It's some sort of drill right?

When I ship US coins overseas, I always write "souvenirs"--because in a way, that's what they are.

so if I wanted to ship 2 pounds of foreign coins to someone in Canada, I could just put numismatic items and they would be OK with that. I really do want to do this but I've hestitated because I didn't want them either returned or the recepient charged taxes for them

I think a lot has to do with what the postal worker had for breakfast. I can get away with writing gift one day then the following day same worker wants a lot more detail. I always try to be as vague as possible, I don't need some postal worker in ANY country seeing "26 COINS" and getting inappropriate thoughts about my package. I think I'm going to try "round shiney pictures" next.

I have seen someone identify the contents of the package as SAMPLE.

I read on another forum awhile ago that they would use "stamped metal rounds". Not sure if that would be taxed or not.

How about medallions, or alloy disks?

I have always used "numismatic items" with no problem. No way I'd put the word "coin" on it....asking to get ripped off.

When my Son was in college in Poland we sent coins back and forth all the time. However, they were always in a package that said school supplies, cameras, photos on film of Europe, etc. Didn't need to say anything about money at all.

Considering some of the people I've seen working at our post office, that would possibly go thru.

Either that or they would shake the package hard to see if you are lying.
