Can anyone tell me if there is a known variety of the 1949 1 markka coin that has a die crack? I would love to post a pic but I have been trying to do so on here for 30 minutes and just getting frustrated because I cant seem to get a pic that fits. The crack is almost definitely not PMD, and it runs on the left hand side of the obverse, through the line to the bottom of the lion's feet. Thanks for any replies....

Are these coins brass/copper or iron? It makes a difference in value. If you have trouble posting pics, try tinypic--it's what I use--very easy.

The 1952 5M is a nice pickup! The brass coin is the scarcer one--how much did you pay? I think I see mint luster, so EF sounds right! Krause shows $20 in EF, but my catalog from Denmark shows $40, and the book is 11 years old. The 1949 is an iron coin, which no doubt broke the dies quickly.

Thanks DVcollector, I paid 12 dollars Canadian for the 1952 5 markka. Yes there is definitely mint lustre, I think it could even get an AU...very possibly. In regards to the 1949 markka, are die cracks common? I know it is not the best picture but I am 100? sure the line you see running along the "49" part of the date is a die crack. Any value?

I think of die cracks as part of the normal life of die, but some collectors like them. I don't think there would be a premium unless it was a dramatic crack and was sought-after.

Thanks DVCollector, appreciate the information. I really need to network with some Scandinavian dealers...I am accumulating alot of Finnish coins and filling alot of holes. My goal is to get a circulated version of every coin minted since 1900.....miles to go.

Picked up a beautiful 1907 5 pennia coin from ebay a few weeks ago, has been a busy time so not much time to post. Got this one at a great bargain....looks to be about VF-30......6 dollars....pretty sure this is way under book value.

A 5 penniƤ 1907 VF-30 is listed as $15 in my most recent catalogue. Very nice find!

Thanks litotes. Have some more on the way and will post more picks as soon as the current "life" craziness subsides a bit.
