Obsessive? Yes. Absolutely. Compulsive? No, not at all.

You are technically describing symptoms of Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) which is somwhat different from OCD.

In either case, it isn't problematic (or technically diagnosable) unless the symptoms are distressing or otherwise impair social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

Organizing is my middle name. From the time I was 11 years old, if I had more than 5 of anything, I made a catalogue listing all pertinent info for whatever it was -- my 45 rpm records were the first. I have lists, spreadsheets, and databases, as appropriate, for all kinds of things -- casino chips and tokens (only from casinos I've been to), golf divot fixers (small collection), my topical stamp collection, CDs (alphabetically by composer). DVDs and VHS tapes are also alphabetical (by movie title) on the shelves, and so are the spices and herbs in the cupboard. My excuse for both is that there are so many, it's the only way I can find anything.

Maybe I'm just compulsive about being obsessed.

Yes, I am fairly obsessive and compulsive ... but its not my fault, I inherited it from my dad -- a pillar of this community!

Not specifically.

I have tendency in some cases, but that's nothing I can't control.

Thanks Terry! I need all the help I can get.

There's no doubt I have OCD. My first recollection of it was back in my high school days.

It is nothing I am proud of, and I think most of us who have it tend to hide it. However, as of late I realize it's nothing to be ashamed of, and although it isn't certain how one developes it (or is born with it), it's just the way it is, and believe me it doesn't just go away and you can't force it, or "wish" it to disappear. I do take a prescription drug which lessens its effect on me, but I am certain I'll have it forever.

Monk, on the TV series, is OCD. I am at least that bad, if not worse.

My primary compulsions have to do with the numbers -- doing certain things an even number of times, and a certain number of times. Of course there are other compulsions, such as the feeling I must do certain things at the same time each day. And others, many others.

I have probably wasted entire months of my life if all the compulsions and the time they take to complete are added together.

Just yesterday I was talking with my family doctor about OCD. He told me that the cause still isn't known for certain. He also said that back in his medical school days, doctors with OCD were actually admired because they usually were more thorough that others.

Related to coin collecting, my OCD possibly contributes to my never ending desire to complete collections regardless of the quality of coins in the set; my desire to have at least two of each collected coin which I can afford; my wish to have coin albums of the same brand, displayed together on the same shelf; and my preference of even year (1900, 1940, 2000, 2006) coins in my collections.

So, I'm out of the closet. I have OCD! I'm not mentally unbalanced, I just have a fairly rare disorder, which I wish I didn't have. But, it makes life interesting!!

There's nothing wrong with being organized, and there's nothing wrong with being disorganized. OCD would only apply if every aspect of your life were consumed with organizing things to the most minute detail, not just "coins and stamps."

If there's nothing to do after organizing your coins and stamps, you can read a book (maybe a good coin book), watch television, or surf the web. You could spend all day looking at various coin web sites.

I voted no opinion. If organization has utility I don't see it as obsessive. Even things that look obsessive --such as the way the Navy aggravated us with their endless inspections and "busy-work" may have had utility, at least to them: We should not have been happy about shining brass and chipping paint all day when we were in port. So happy sailors must be up to no good. Watch them closely.

"Hey Chief, I think they threw all the chipping hammers over the side."

Oh, we did, we did.

Obsessive to me is something that serves no useful purpose. Like Jack Nicholson in the movie As Good as it gets. Where he kept turning his lights on and off and washing his hands constantly and jumping over cracks in side walks. That was a good movie, BTW.

There is one thing that I'm sure I'm obsessive about and that's "market grading." Since I mostly collect tokens that are not affected in anyway by TPG antics, there is no utility for me in worrying about them. And yet I think about them constantly.

OldDan, that was Sgt. Schultz from Hogan's Heroes.

Thingee, Boy, that's my wife's motto. But she isn't OCD.

It doesn't really apply to me, as I'm not as organized as I should be, and could be.

My idiosyncracies (sp?) are as previously explained.

I'm probably borderline OCD, what with all my lists and files and whatnot. It's not just coins, it's everything. My closet is grouped by season and color, my coupons are in order by expiration date, my spice rack is not in alphabetical order but I'm getting to that... I'm also very superstitious, I think the two may be connected. I'm convinced my hockey team will win if I wear this shirt and those earrings to the game. Go ahead and laugh, I laugh at myself for the silliness sometimes!
