I' mot sure what you mean:
"Anyone else come here expecting military challenge coin?"
If you would like to see a military challenge coin, I'll be glad to pull my unit coin.

I'll throw in a guess for a different reverse type. Well my first thought was a fallen horseman type reverse. I tried to draw an arrow on the back showing why I thought so. Of course in-hand you can tell a lot more than me. Here is a link to a LRB ID site that may or may not be helpful: The title also made me think of military challenge coins, until I realized what subforum we were in. -wheatiefan

Didn't even think about Constantius Gallus but it has to be considered.
After it being pointed out I think the fallen horseman type also seems probable.

Directly above the head is an N slightly lighter than the TA to the left and the T to the right. The next 3 letters are IVN (Junior) and are a bit lighter but really only the V in clear.
Whenever asking ID help it would be good to tell the size and weight of the coin. Gallus has falling horseman types in both the earlier AE2 size and the reduced AE3. This head looks more like his later, smaller ones from what I see but the significant question is whether the portrait has any decoration on the head. Gallus never has any while Constantius II always does.

Doug, you are correct and I am one of those always asking for size and weight when others ask for ID help. To be honest, I thought no one would be able to ID this coin. I just thought I'd put it out there for a challenge. I have been proven wrong. Most of you have stepped up and gone way beyond in your efforts to attribute this coin and I am not only amazed and impressed, I am also profoundly grateful.
To answer your question, the coin is 17mm and weighs 1.7g.
Thanks to all

I may be seeing things but is that an 'A' beneath the horse? Also, can you see any letters to the left of the bust in hand JW?

I'll explain my reasoning. I think Doug is correct about Con Gallus - the 'TANTIVS IVN' is pretty clear when you know where to look. I also think lazarus and wheatiefan are correct about it being a fallen horeman - even if it looks a bit L. S. Lowry. The legend on yours is unbroken and has to be 'DN CONSTANTIVS IVN NOB C' as the 'NOB CAES' ones wouldn't fit. This leaves us with only 3 mints, Sirmium, Siscia and Aquileia. Taking size into account I think I have got the possibilities down to 10 coins from the above mints. However none of these have 'A's below the horse or to the left of the bust. When I saw what I thought was an 'A' it confused me.

It does help - I'm happy now that there is nothing; left of bust, under horse, in left field reverse. I think we are now left with just 6: Sirmium 49 or 53 Siscia 351 or 354 Aquileia 200 or 203 It might sound crazy but style wise I would lean towards Sirmium. looking at a limited number of examples your bust and the arm curving wide around the spear on the reverse make me feel that way. Its late here now so will look again in the morning to see if I still feel the same. This is the 'Challenge coin' so it would be a shame to stop here

Well, slept on it and may be able to add a bit more. I'm also still happy with the assumptions that got it down to 10 coins. Here is your mintmark: I think I can see: ?, Top of an 'S', ?, ?, Top of an 'M'. The only remaining coins that this fits with are from Sirmium, reassuring as that was what the style looked like to me anyway: Sirmium 49 - ASIRM or BSIRM Sirmium 53 - BSIRM dot I think there may be enough detail on the first character to have a good guess at it being 'A' or 'B' but I wouldn't like to say either way. Not bad considering what we started with!

Wow, I must say that I am impressed that anything could be deciphered from this coin. So bravo, everyone!

I never thought anyone would be able to attribute this coin, but I believe through the collaborative effort we have it narrowed down to one coin, with two possible shops. I couldn't ask for more. Thanks to all

As luck would have it, I have a Sirmium Gallus Falling Horseman. Realizing there are probably a thousand dies of such a common coin this will not be a 100% match but it can be used to compare.
