The Crowned GP countermark is from the Azores, but this coin looks like a cast counterfeit to me.

Indeed G.P. stands for "Governo Portugues", and they used this type of countermark in Azores. But the shape of the crown on the pictures in Krause seems different to me. As I haven't seen any other Portuguese colony with this type CM I would too question the authenticity of this coin.

I have seen cast fake Spanish 5 peseta coins very similar to this one, but without the countermark.

Sorry, nattwell, but I'm pretty certain I can see a seam around the obverse of this one.

nattwell- I'm sorry to say that Spanish 5 peseta coins have been heavily counterfeited despite the fact that there is not too much demand outside of Spain. Every time I go to a show in Madrid or Barcelona it is as if I am trying to find the few real ones floating on top of a sea of counterfeits. Seriously, I remember being at a show in Barcelona where there were some dealers who had books full of coins for sale, but not a single one was authentic.

Hi.

Sorry, but that's a common counterfeit of the Portuguese c/m GP.
The coin is a cast one, with far less weight than an original duro and is not countermark, as the stamp relief is printed at the same time as the coin is minted (you can see that there isn't any smash in the opposite side / obverse as it was expected on a c/m coin).
On the other way, no genuine GP c/m is known stamped on an Amadeo I duro.

A genuine GP c/w will look like to this one c/m on a Metropolitan Portugal cruzado novo or 480 reis.

@Archraz - Can you please enlighten us with these 5-Ptas counterfeits? Were they able to achieve a high level of similarity with the real coins?
