Poll Question
I was wondering about this. Out of all the coin dealers I've called, only 2 were ladies. Both of them were helpful (although one priced her coins too high) , answered my questions, and weren't cranky jerks like many of the guy dealers were. The dealer that is trying to get me a 1916D Dime is one of the ladies I called. So, I'm wondering how many collectors are ladies? - coincrazed

I am a guy and over the years of going to coin shows I have noticed only a hand full of female coin collectors. Even the people at the shows (non dealers) were male. John1

We've had other posts on the topic before, such as here. The official CCF membership statistics at the moment are: Female members: 671 Male members: 3625 No declared gender: 5308 That's a (declared) ratio of better than 6:1, which is a much higher ratio than my real-world experience might indicate. For example, the ratio for past and present members at my coin club is about 12:1.

I'm male most days but one day I fell off the roof and landed straddling the truck box (one leg in, one leg out) and I suddenly wasn't so sure.

The return of Coincrazed- I don't mean to oversimplify and invoke a stereotype of coin collectors, but it really does seem that most numismatists are guys. I wonder why though. Sigmund Freud had an interesting theory about numismatists, but it is not exactly family-friendly, so I'll just let you guys use your imagination.

that is the only thing that turns me off about this hobby, the amount of unfriendly cranky gentleman. I don't find them approachable and its a turn off. if their attitude stinks I won't buy anything from them. I must say that's one thing I liked about this site. I have't encountered a meanie as of yet . don't get me wrong I have met some cool gents as well, as well as ladies. in fact one of ladies I buy some of my coins from is very approachable and knowledgeable. she offers great customer service.

I think my profile is 'gender neutral'. My age is also wrong But there are a few of us ladies around - although we can, at times, get cranky too And welcome back, Arthrene!

All I can say is that there aren't enough lady collectors.

I'm doing my best to add to the lady-collector pool.. but so far my two daughters are not interested. Although one did bring me some Lincoln cents she rescued from a friend at school the other day!

Yes this has been brought up before here and in many other places. It is discussed at coin shows too. Of course there are more males than females in this hobby but there are many reasons for that. For one thing it is partially due to upbringing. Men seldom try to involve a daughter with their hobbies of almost any type. A man usually will not take a daughter to a gun range, gun store, coin show, etc. A wife will however, take both boys and girls anywhere. However, there too since few women are or have been into coins, stamps, guns, cars, etc. there is not much chance they would take a daughter to such places therefore continuing that situation. Another reason, here is where I get into trouble, women think it is more important to do things like shopping for clothing, food, furniture than to go to a coin show. Women further waste time doing other things too like raising kids, helping with their homework, putting them to bed, etc. It is a well known fact that women spend about 85% of all money in the USA so that proves they would rather spend coins than collect collecting them. Almost any male that is dating would never take a female on a date to a coin show, gun show, shooting range, etc. And if you ask most females they would not appreciate doing that if suggested. Again, mostly due to upbringing. I might suuggest any men out there try taking a wife, daughter or other female to a coin show.

. ha- that is too funny. I should be considered lucky because my dad has taken me to all three of the above . and I thank god that my mother was not very prissy.

Part if it is simply due to the fact that the brain systems on male and female are hardwired quite differently.
Ladies are definitely better at multitasking and scheduling in their heads multiple and disparate activities within the same time space to make best use of minutes. Gentlemen have consistently proven themselves better at linear thinking, taking a single task or item and seeing it through to exclusion of all else.
It is theorized this has to do with the sheer quantitative difference in the number of interconnects between the left and right hemispheres of the brain with ladies having many more of these interconnects.
I'm saying that single tasking like finishing a collection is theorized to be better suited to male linear thought.
Sorry to be so dry.
