If anyone has caught the movie trailer for Sahara, can anyone tell me what is wrong with the coin being shown?

I haven't seen that yet, I'll have to watch for it. On a related note, does anyone remember the scene in "Friday Night Lights" where they decided the playoff teams with a coin toss and one of the coaches used a coin that was so worn it was hard to tell heads from tails? Funny stuff, and a great movie. If anyone hasn't seen it- do so, even if you don't really like football!

I haven't seen Sahara, probably won't until it comes out in DVD and is in the cheap bin at Walmart. But, I know about the little inaccuracies in movies that spoil the whole film, e.g. using Model 1873 Colt revolvers and trapdoor Springfield rifles in Civil War movies. Drives me up the wall.

I found the trailer online and watched it. The picture was very small and the only thing I got a clear image of was the reeding on the coin which seemed to me to be extremely sharp. If the coin shown was meant to be an old gold coin, the reeding doesn't work with that, but I think the trailer on TV probably shows different images that I'm missing.

Update: I Googled Sahara trailer and watched, then I realized I had read the Clive Cussler book. Great reading! And it looks like Hollywood has finally put out a GOOD Dirk Pitt movie. But, that trailer didn't have the coin in it: http://www.themoviebox.net/movies/2...ara/trailer/, so I kept looking until I found a site with all the trailers and promos where I found the TV spot on Sahara. This had the coin in a 1/10th second frame, but I captured it quite nicely and got a good look at it: http://www.apple.com/trailers/param...e_large.htmlMy first thought was that the Confederates hadn't produced any $20 gold dollars, so I did a little more research to verify my presumption (it's nice being right): http://www.csacurrency.com/csacoin/csa20dol.htmLooking at the Sahara CSA $20, it's not a bad attempt at reproducing what would have been the original CSA $20. (Shouldn't it have "copy" stamped on it? ). But, going one step further for argument's sake that the Confederacy DID mint a whole bunch of $20 gold coins, the one pictured in the movie appears to have a slightly different font for "C.S.A", I can't make out any abbreviations for the CSA states which are supposed to be in the loops (chain links?) around the rim, and there are supposed to be stars inside the loops, but they look more like blobs. I take back what I said in my earlier post regarding authenticity. It appears Sahara's producers made a good attempt to be as accurate as possible in the details. I just don't think they intended that anyone would look at the coin in such detail. Or did they? If these attachments come through, the one with the fingers is the Sahara coin while the other is the CSA concept coin.

Good call, Fred. The trailer I saw did not have this shot of the coin. It only showed the edge.

Yeah, if I put my mind to it, I can do it right. But it's ND who deserves the credit for the discovery. He picked out a scene that was maybe two frames long at best; it was just long enough of a flash to let people know it was a coin. I had to keep backing up and going forward to get it to stop on the coin.

When you spend as much time as I do on coins, it is easy to pick them out. One day I hope to be able to call the coins as they hit the floor.
Atta-girl Susan. You got it!!!!!!!!!

BTW, OD, your signature line: "A pipe gives a wise man time to think and a fool something to put in his mouth!". I'm a pipe smoker, but sometimes a cigar is just a cigar and there is no reason.

BTW, the movie is getting good reviews here in Arizona. Which leads me to a frivolous thought: imagine a cache of these Confederate coins actually existed and was suddenly discovered, SS Republic or Sahara style. What would be the value of these coins? Since they would be coming in with no previous market to set a benchmark price, how would an initial value be set? Presume 5000 CSA $20 gold coins (can't be called double eagles, can they?), all of 1862 date.

Next question: Does anyone here think that the movie hype will cause counterfeits of the coin in the movie to hit the market as genuine?

Hmmmm. I hadn't thought about this aspect. I suppose it can be looked at in two ways: first, the only ones who have taken any interest in the details of the "lost" coins themselves have been sharpshooting numismatists like ourselves who aren't about to counterfeit such coins. OR, second, I'm wrong about #1 and some counterfeiter with attention to details gets the idea planted into his nefarious mind by the movie and starts popping out his own CSA $20s. And, this puts yet a third thought into my gravid mind: what happened to the "coins" manufactured for the movie? While they were nothing but stage props (at least one of them), were they destroyed after the movie was shot or were they passed around to the cast and extras as souvenirs? Methinks we might be seeing them soon on ebay.
