I have been sorting through my world coins with a Whittman RedBook for Modern World Coins 1850-1964. It says that a 1947 5 Francs in Very Fine condition should be worth $500. Is the book wrong on this listing? If so how much would the coin actually be worth?

The common '47 5 Franc is aluminium. The rare and expensive one is aluminium-bronze. Krause gives it as $400 in VF.

Oh ok thanks. Are there any special mint marks for the expensive one or an open or closed 9 in the date?

The '47 can have open or closed 9. This site:

will give you a good idea of the difference. The Al-Br has a golden colour.

Are just the coins that are VF or better the ones that are expensive? Or is the mintage for them just low?
