Trying To Identify Coin (Us? British?) From 1817 | Shilling

mystery1817 New Member United States 2 Posts	Posted 03/07/2012 11:42 am Hi, I found a mystery coin in the attic. It is the same diameter as a US quarter, and has the same type of ridged edge, but is only about half as thick. The front shows a profile facing right, with what looks like a bow at the base of the neck. The date 1817 is stamped on the bottom, and there are words going around the profile. I can't make them out, but they start wirh "GEO(R?)" on the bottom left, "BRIT" in the upper right (around 2 o'clock), and "FD" on the bottom (around 5 o'clock). The back is worn and badly scratched, all I can make out is a ring of words and the letters "MA" at 8 o'clock). Any help would be appreciated - thank you! I think it is one of these British shillings It looked so much like a quarter that I kept thinking it was American. Probably worthless as the condition is not good. Thanks for your help!
