I recently purchased this coin on ebay and was wondering if I should bother cleaning it further to bring out more details. If I should, do you recommend any cleaning methods? I normally collect classic US coins and cleaning coins worries me! Thanks for the help! (In hand, coin is more brownish/greenish than pictured)  |

I wouldn't do any more cleaning on it, you may remove whats left of the silvering.

As echizento says, if the coin has a silver wash, any additional cleaning may remove it. I'm curious though, what made you buy this particular coin? I have one of this type and always liked the reverse style of this coin. If I read the mintmark correctly, R thunderbolt ?, it's a Antoninianus from the Rome mint as is mine. But mine has no silvering remaining. Mine is Probus, RIC 202.  |

Nice coin. Due to the age, any type of cleaning could affect the finish. Nice addition to a collection. Good Luck.

yeah, probably not a coin to attempt your first cleaning on. the stuff doesn't look like it would come off easily if at all. looks like that spot by the horses legs it through the patina also? I also vote don't touch.

These types of Antoninianii, as already mentioned, are weakly silvered.
A lot of them were melted down to obtain the little silver they had.
On such remaining examples the silvering is like dust and will flake off all too easily.
I had an AE Billon Antoninianus, with that yellowish tarnish, and was able to clean it off using just a Q-Tip soaked in lemon juice, dabbing gently the yellowsih tarnish, and it cleaned it well.
For your coin, I do not recommend it due to the weakness of the silvering.
