Claudius II (Gothicus) 268-270 AD; AE Antoninianus, 3.16 grams, 19.5 mm; RIC171; Mediolanum mint O: Radiate Draped Bust Rt. IMP CLAUDIUS PF AVG R: Victory advancing rt. VICTORIA AVG The mint mark is obviously an S and I think this stands for secondus; indicating the officia? If the S is secondus and there are not other marks in the fields how "they/we" know it is a Mediolanum minted coin? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claudius_Gothicus He looks so serious doesn't he.

That example is a VERY nice cut above the average! DO NOT put it in a PVC album page, but an archival qulaity album page. This coin is dark enough already.

Good lookin' Victory!! (I think it's carrying a 5-wood?) ... Nice deeply toned, eye-appealing coin!!

Very nice Claudius II Gothicus. On the obverse, looks like a better than usual engraving style.

This mint had nice style which is distinctive for the mint and usually have P, S, or T officia marks as opposed to some other system. I do not know how the scholars placed this group at this city and it is always possible that some scholar will come out with a completely different theory in the future. Things like that have happened.

Thanks everyone for all of your comments:) Doug thanks for chiming in about my mint location question:) Sel. I had planned to put this one in cardboard 2x2. Do you feel that will protect enough? I am not sure that it is considered archival quality and not sure if any of my plastic flips are. The portrait is definitely what made this one a..."I have to have it coin". The portrait is quite a bit higher than the legend. Here is couple more pics that I tried to show off the celetor's work.

Putting it in a cardboard 2x2 means you will never touch the surface again, nor see the edge, nor enjoy it as a free coin. It will become a 2x2. I much prefer flips. Usually the coins stay in the flips, but sometimes they come out and I love those occasions. -- Warren

I agree with Warren except that a flip isolates too much. I prefer trays.

This coin makes me want a Claudius II....... which I had never considered before!
I use trays.
