Coins arrived today... The roman one have discernable details before cleaning, the greek one really not much can be seen. None of the coins are large, a couple are really caked but most just lightly. Took these pictures with my phone...then I gave them a scrub with a toothbrush (which did nothing) before putting them all in distilled water. I also received my USB microscope in the post, better photo's of individual coins will follow.

Looking forward to your report in the USB microscope. The images of the coins right now is too small to offer much.

I'll give him this, at least he posted photos. (Although low-lighting seems to be the main culprit in the poor photos.)

Those shots yes aren't lit by more than daylight, for some reason the phone couldn't focus on the Greek coins either.
I jut fiddled a little with the USB microscope...and posted in photography section. I didn't photograph the ancients yet with it... it isn't so great but I am sure it will be OK for purpose (the field of vision means it cant take a good photo of any larger coins but the ancients are all small) and it won't capture when I press the button so I have to use snipping tool to take the photo.
It does however have 4 strong LED lights which just reflect and glare taking shots of coins in flips, but on the dull surfaces of the ancients it will probably be OK. My expectations were not high for £12 but it was still good value.
I will let my coins have a little soak in distilled water and when I get a chance I will photo them individually and post. Then I will choose some to go into olive oil.

You've got nicer greeks than I got - and those romans look really good! I'm sure you'll get nice coins out of those! All with well descernible features, all still mucky - you've got some nice coins there. And good reverses too - I seem to have gotten a lot of Gloria Romanorvms..

The Romans were pleasing to my inexperienced eyes... details could be seen but its hard for me to guess how well they will clean up since I havent done this before and its hard to tell what will come off and what is wear.
The Greeks I can literally see no details, just the odd lump and bump, I will leave them for the time being as they are in distilled water. The Romans I have now seperated into two batches. The most promising batch is in distilled water and the less promising ones with bigger residues I have moved to olive oil.
During that process I took some photos. The first 4 are the ones I will keep in water the next 6 are into olive oil. I have yet to start picking with anything...

Can the lighting be adjusted so you don't get that orange color?

Maybe, most of the problem would be the sun was low in the sky giving it a very orange hue.
I haven't played with any of the colour adjustments on the camera yet...I am sure you will see my photographs improve in time as I discover what works and what doesn't but the photographs are enough to see if any of the coins look like they have potential or potential problems.
Rome wasn't built in a day... I already over-exerted myself cataloguing all of my US and British notes this week.

Do you want any help identifying these coins you posted, or do you want to see what you come up with yourself?

I dont yet have a catalogue of coins to ID from (I will get one...I realise I will need it) so yes identifications would be very useful... opinions/comments/advice on particular coins is also welcome.
