Okay I'm baffled. I was going through my grandparents change jar and came across this. It has been cut into but not by me and it IS magnetic. Any ideas?   |

I would bet it is zinc plated. That would account for the color and magnetism.

I seem to remember hearing that the mint experimented with aluminium cents in the early '70s, but I don't think they used steel or anything magnetic. It's possibly counterfeit, but for the life of me I can't fathom why anyone would counterfeit a 1973 cent.

No, I don't seem to have a scale handy, but I'm confused because with the cut made into the coin, wouldnt I be able to see some copper?

The Aluminum cent was made only in 1974, so that rules that out.

Let me correct myself, this coin is only slightly magnetic.

A penny being dipped does not turn silver.
I would say it is nickel plated as well. Though why anyone would do that is beyond me.
