It can be frustrating, but once you actually find one, you will know the difference. The coin in your picture looks like Machine Doubling to me, since it is flat and shelf-like. Notice also how it takes away from the thickness of the highest point of the letters, especially on the E. This happens when the die "bounces" or chatters on the coin, and smushes the edge of the letters down. A real doubled die adds to the letters, not takes away. They are out there, but they can be very hard to find, especially major ones. Check out sites like coppercoins.com and look at some of the doubled dies listed there. They have great close up pictures of even some of the minor varieties. That site helped me figure out what was doubling and what wasn't. Also doubleddie.com is good. It has a section on "Worthless Doubling" that explains a lot of this better than I ever could. Good Luck!
