merlinwhirlin0: First of all, welcome to the CCF! Good to have you aboard.

I have looked through my copy RIC (vol. 5 part 2) and Wildwinds, and I fail to find a silver coin listed under Allectus.

Sear reports a 'billon denarius' in my 1988 edition, but all of the rest of the base metal coins listed under Allectus are 'AE' antoninianii.

This leads me to thinking that this coin is most probably a modern fantasy coin, not really a fake, because it is in the wrong metal. From the picture, it appears to in quite good quality silver.

What is it's weight, and how did you come to own it?
This piece is well worth keeping, even just for interest sake.

Seeing what looks like a J on the reverse reminds me of a barbarous coin I have. Perhaps the ancient forum is the right place for this post ?

I also was not able to locate any silver type coins for this emperor. However I'm not sure that it's modern. The look of the coin suggests age and the detail is excellent and what I would expect to see on an ancient coin. If it's a reproduction whoever did it did and excellent job. My feeling is that this is an unrecorded coin and could be rare.

Hello and thankyou first of all for your responses, what you are telling me is in fact what I've come to realise and my reason for comming onto this site this I can assure you was found by myself some years ago and in context with other roman finds, unfortunately I let it go having not realised to my shame the very importance of this find I sold it some years ago to a dealer for a very small sum and have since learnt through hearsay of what he sold it for,i would like to know out of interest just how much you would consider a coin of this significance to go for please as I want to put the rumour to bed with some potential fact having only now the claim to fame of finding somthing potentiall so rare,I can assure all of you who may have your doubts..IT IS GENUINE, and I feel sick at the thought of what I was conned out of again thankyou regards Mark.

Not a "Fantasy" or "Fake" but real.
Compare with the below example.

We have another Detectorist (Monkeybean) here, who found a rare AE of Carausius (Allectus predecessor).

I assume you know about this era of the "break-away Britannic Empire"?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Britannic_Empire

Out of interest, which county did you find it in?
Was this "pre-internet" era, and so not viewable on an online database such as The Portable Antiquities Scheme?
If you did have it recorded?

Based on the one that sold for $675, your's would probably close to that price.

echizento: I certainly agree with you on one point. If this piece is a genuine unrecorded silver coin of Allectus, it could only be proven with investigation by a leading World expert.

That IS possible. My inclination would be to send, in the first instance, all of the information on it I had to nowhere less than the British Museum. The obverse style and the ageing seems to be OK, and would be enough reason to initiate at least a preliminary investigation of it by the BM.

They are a friendly lot. I have been in the strongroom of Coins and Medals Dept. of the BM upon written application some years ago.

I don't think its 'silver', at least not in the way that would make it exceptional.

It may have had a lot of surviving silvering or have been an abnormally high AR billon coin but its not an unknown AR coin.

Its a very nice example and £500 would not be out of the question as in rooneydog's link but I would be more inclined to say around £100-150.

Bobby that was rooneydog's link. I do think the coin is legit and agree with sel_69l if he still owned the coin to take it to the British Museum but sadly he doesn't own it any longer.

I realised echizento and edited

The coin is certainly authentic - but I would bet my entire collection on it not being an unknown AR, still a great coin but not that special unfortunately.
