It is REALLY hard to find both an obverse Brockage and a reverse Brockage of the same coin type. (What I call a "Brockage Pair").

This low-grade pair showed up in a Noble (Australia) auction some years ago.

I grabbed the lot. <g>

By the way, here is my Penny of the same type (Reverse Brockage only) -

Nice - I've never owned a brockage. These make an impressive group!

Certainly a unique achievement to put those coins together. I'm wondering, though; how do both brockages get made in the same mintage? So, a struck coin sticks to the obverse die in one case, and the reverse die in another? I suppose I had always imagined gravity would just keep a coin on the lower die.

There seem to be two possibilities, remembering that Caps usually stick to upper Dies -

a. Sometime during the minting year, the upper and lower Dies were reversed (accidentally or on purpose),

or

b. The previously struck coin (the Cap) stuck to the lower Die.
(1). Unusual, but it is possible in coin presses in which the upper Die goes up and the lower one goes down.
(2). Then, it would be possible for new planchets to enter the chamber without hitting an unusually tall bottom Die.

BTW, here in another Brockage Pair, this one from Austria -

Nice.

This is the only one I have... such a shame it's so worn and holed :(

Hi RED,

Holed it may be, but still quite scarce.

Thanks for showing.

Best from this side of the Pond,
Bill
