For me these are the most difficult type coin to grade then add all that toning on top it. I see quite a few rim dings and scratches under the toning. Still a really nice example. I'm going to go with AU55 details

Nice toning, one of my favorite series! I'm at EF-45 to AU-50 on this one, maybe closer to EF. The leaves and shield on the reverse show a tad bit more wear than I'd expec to see on a AU coin, bit the arrows and star tips look very much AU. So it could go either way. I'm not sure if the rim dings or color would warrant a details grade or not, I think it may... but either way a very nice example! Does it have coin alignment or metal alignment? A few members, including myself have 1861's with metal alignment (180 degree rotated die, so if you flip it over the reverse is also right side up... Not upside down like all US coinage) apparently it's not uncommon on the 61's so I'm just curious if this one has it as well?

Grading sites arnt always the best for grading, especially this series. For instance PCGS photograde only show coins without the leaves/arrows and the single star (not the doubled outline) the best thing to do would be to go onto ebay and look at over coins profesionally graded and compare yours to those. I hate saying things like this, as I feel like such a jerk, but I must speek the truth... and unfortionitly, I've looked at enough of these where I don't think this one has has a chance of going above AU-50, are more probably EF-45 (though it could possibly go AU-50) I see it as a borderline EF/AU coin, possibly bumped up to AU due to the amazing toning... But it really has the details of an EF-45... It does appear that it may have been cleaned and retoned, most noticibly above the date and to the left of the lll in the center of the "C", but without it in hand I wouldn't dare say that's what it is or not... The rim ding doesn't look too bad... Hard to say if it'd warrant a details grade or not. Is it just the photo where the rim looks "chewed up" (for a better lack of words) on the bottom of the reverse photo? Don't let the grade get to you, even if its not as high as you may have thought. I't's a beautiful coin whatever grade it would warrant! The toning is superb! I'd be very happy to have that in my collection.

Thanks all. Can anyone help with the grade of this one? And what you would pay for it. I'm thinking of buying it.

That ones very nice too!! Another great toner!! What's the asking price on this one?
I have this one at an AU-53ish... Give or take.. A little sharper detail than the first you posted! And also very nice toning.. This one doesn't look cleaned In the least...
Actually, on a closer look that one looks like its possibly a 1862/1? Yes? no?

Yes it's a PCGS 1862/1. Asking price is $250. Pretty high. I'm trying to get it down to $210

Nice, I thought it was the overdate!!
Yikes, $250? What's PCGS have it graded at? Unless I undergraded it and its a 58 $250 sounds a bit high.. But I still call it a 63.. maybe 55 tops but I don't see it...
You have to take into account a premium for the toning... But without knowing the grade it's hard to tell how much...

Ok I'm inclined to wait for more opinions but I'm so darn impatient. NathanASE I commend your grading, coin is graded AU53. So what do you think I should pay?

Lol, I'm probably just as impatient, so I totally understand. I literally just started searching for it, I couldn't help it.. Don't worry, I have no intentions on buying it, I just wanted to see if I could find better pics in case I under graded it.. But I guess I was spot on The seller is very reputable in the Coin World and deals with amazing coins... But wow!! Asking $275 or best offer? Yikes!! That's a hefty premium!! If you can get it for $210 I'd say that's pretty darn good, slight premium for the toning on the grade... But with one offer already (unless that was you) I don't know if they'll accept that, that's quite a bit lower than the asking price... But who knows.. It's definitely worth a shot!! I hope you do get it!! Personally I wouldn't pay much over what your thinking... I definitely believe in paying a premium for a nicely toned coin, but I just can't bring myself to pay those super inflated prices, for example the "monster" toners (Morgan's come to mind where MS-64's are $500-$900 for common dates). But it all boils down to how much you like the coin... If its worth that to you then by all means get it. Price guides are just that, guides. I mean it is a very nice toner, slabbed and a overdate at that... So again it's all about what it's worth to you, not what the slab says, not any price guide, it's all about what it's worth to you! Let us know what you do! I'd definitely be curious as to what they accept for a price (if you don't mind sharing) and its definitely a coin to be proud of!!

Hmm you said $275 with best offer. It says $250 with best offer on their website. I think $215 is about right. I don't believe the toning is worth more than $30 extra. I'll try my best to get the coin at a good price.

Ahh... I didn't see it on their website... I googled and found it on their ebay store actually, and yes it's a buy it now of $275 or best offer, but probably to account for the eBay/paypal fees.. $250 or BO is a bit more reasonable but still high IMHO.. For me at least. But some people are known to pay a insane premium for toners... Lol, I'm not one of them.. I'll pay a premium but not an insane one. I completely agree with you, $30+/- over is a decent "toning premium" for this one, and $215 sounds fair for both you and the seller, to me at least. Definitely let us know what happens! It's a beauty!! That's for sure! And good luck, I really hope you get it!
