Hi. I'm trying to update my Canadian albums for the years 2000-2007, as they are a bit inaccurate. I haven't had much luck finding information on the web. I'm trying to determine what was minted for circulation and what I can reasonably expect to find in US circulation (no error coins).
Thanks!
Brian

Brian, While I may not be 100% accurate, my information is based on searching boxes of coins every week, usually nickels and pennies, but occasionally dimes and quarters. Pennies: 2006P - never seen one (my understanding is the RCM logo mintmark is replacing the 'P', not in addition to the 'P') 2007 - nope (haven't seen one) 2007P - nope (haven't seen one) Nickels: 2000P - they exist, but are hard to come by. I've got about 6 or 7 and I search a minimum of $100 in nickels each week. 2002 - yes 2003(RD) - yes 2003(UC) - yes 2004 - yes 2005 - yes 2005 VE-Day (good question, I don't think I've seen it without the mintmark, but I've got a couple hundred at home that I'll check) 2007 - nope (haven't seen one) 2007P - nope (haven't seen one) Dimes Looks like you've got them covered. Make sure you've got both 2001's. The Year of the Volunteer, and the standard bluenose reverse. Quarters (for Quarters I really just trying to understand 2006 & 2007) 2006P Breast Cancer (Pink Ribbon) - no 2006RCM Breast Cancer Awareness - these are the only ones I have seen, and the colour doesn't wear off like the 2004 Poppy's did. 2006P Medal of Bravery - no 2006RCM Medal of Bravery - yes 2007P - no 2007RCM - yes 2007P Curling - no 2007RCM Curling - yes 2007P Ice Hockey - no 2007RCM Ice Hockey - yes 2007P Wheelchair Curling - no 2007RCM Wheelchair Curling - yes and the next two Olympic coins are due in September and October respectively. Hope this helps!

Topher, thanks that's a alot of help, maybe someone can confirm for us?
It seems you do a similar amount to myself, but in Canada. Do have a list somewhere of what you've found in rolls? I'd love to see how complete of collection you've made.

I don't have a complete listing, but my memory isn't too bad:
In a box ($50) of pennies, I typically find: 2-4 wheats (one box yielded 13!) - oldest 1926 2-8 George VI pennies - oldest 1937 20-50 QEII (first portrait - up through 1964) 100+ Lincolns (usually about a 60/40 split between Zincolns and copper Lincolns)
In a box of nickels: 2-4 George VI nickels - oldest 1937 (I recently found a 1927 George V!) 20-40 QEII (first portrait - up through 1964, only one for 1967 so far though) 20-50 Jeffersons - so far only one pre-1964 (it was a 1961) I have almost a complete set from 1964-present from circulation in Canada, although the only 'S' mint was a 1970S.
Dimes: (I don't go through a full box at a time, but usually $100 in a shot. So far, I'd say I've gone through about $1500) 5 silver dimes so far, 2 were in the same roll. ZERO 1970 dimes. (I had a kind friend who bought me one, but I'd still like to find one.) Roosevelts - probably average about 1 for every 2 rolls, no silver Rosies yet.
I find they're not consistent either. It's usually a really good week, or a lousy one, not much in between. My problem is disposing of the rolls. My bank only takes rolled coins, and I try not to overload them with too many rolls at a time, but I also want to make sure that I don't keep getting the same rolls over and over.

Topher,
Very interesting to hear from someone on the other side. For myself -
Cdn pennies - my oldest is 1920, I have about 1/2 of the GVI's, need only 1954 QEII
Cdn nickels - my oldest is 1950, have 1961-66, 68-69, 73-onwards
Cdn dimes - 1943 (found 2), 1950, 1971-onwards (haven't found a 1996!)
Cdn quarters - pretty spotty, found a 1946 in US circulation last week though!
Seems like my best bet is to get Cdn nickels & quarters next time I'm in Canada (that might be cheating though).
Do you search Canadian half dollars?

I can't get Canadian halves. I've tried several banks, and only once did they have more than 3 half dollars period. I've asked them to order them in for me and they looked it up in their system and can't even order them. Even if they did, there would be no silver, as the size changed when they went off of silver. I still wouldn't mind putting a set of nickel halves together, but I'm stuck on a small handful, as I refuse to pay more than face for them. As for your collection, I would just find yourself a trade partner north of the border, as some of us also collect US coins. Stick around long enough and get some more posts, and you may even find one here.  Pennies: There are two varieties of 1953, 1954 and 1955 pennies. All are hard to find in circuation, some are extremely scarce. There are a scarce few 1985 pennies with a pointed 5. I have found all of 2 in about $1000 worth of pennies. Oddly enough, I found them within two weeks of each other. Nickels - anything older than 1982 is pure nickel (with a few exceptions of chrome-plated steel or Tombac). Again - 2 different versions at the beginning of QEII's reign. (see above) 1967 - despite the fact that many more were minted compared to years previous and afterwards, these are pretty much gone from circulation as it is the only time since 1937 that the beaver was not on the reverse. I've found only 1 in over $2500 worth of nickels. Dimes - in 1968 there were some dimes made of 50% silver, and 2 different varieties made of the nickel version, one in Ottawa and one in Philadelphia. The only way to tell the difference is in the reeding. Quarters - 1991 - keep ALL!! Less than a million minted, and nearly impossible to find! (I've yet to find one) 1992 - one for each of the 10 provinces and 2 territories (now there are 3 territories) - they are still around, but it takes a lot of searching. I am a Manitoba and an Alberta away from a second set. 1999 and 2000 - twelve different varieties - all can still be found in circulation with regular ease. 2004 - 2007, in addition to 1-3 commemorative quarters each year, there are also the standard caribou reverses, so if collecting them, make sure to get all varieties. That's the short version. [:D}

1967 nickel ... I guess they're like the 1943 steel US pennies, no real value, but everyone sets them aside thinking they are rare. Too bad about the half dollars. Have you considered calling an armored car service directly? I recently read a case on treasurenet.com of a guy calling an armored car service in the US for Eisenhower dollars. They let him go there and pick up 1,500 of them for $5. There might be a similar opportunity in Canada. The banks that take them have to send them somewhere. Brian

That would be very tempting. I'd even settle for face value for a few rolls. I'll have to look into that.

Topher et al,
I just got back from a 3 day trip to Vancouver. I did some coin roll hunting up there. I found 21 quarters I needed and 2 dimes. I would have done more, but there was only so many quarters I could dump (I did leave 3 rolls at one restaurant to pay for a meal, and pay for museum tickets with 2 rolls). Finding the 1992 and 1999 commeratives was a bit tougher than I thought it'd be, I only found a couple of those. It was a lot of fun.
Also, I asked at several banks if they had half dollars. None did. One teller even told me, "they don't come like that."

Brian,
You have to ask for "50 cent coins". For some reason, they don't understand "half dollars". LOL I've managed to get a total of 4 (coins, not rolls) in the past year by asking, if that tells you how often we see them.
The 1999 quarters aren't all that hard to find (for me). I've got plenty of each, just from hunting rolls. The 1992s are getting harder, and I have found duplicates of all but Alberta and Manitoba so far, but they are certainly far less common.

kestrelia are you looking for the 1999 and 2000 milleniums quarters. There was one quarter put out for each month with a total of 24 coins. If you are interested in getting some of the ones you are missing let me know. Maybe we can do a trade. FASTBACK13

This weekend I found a 1947 Maple Leaf quarter in some hand rolled coins and a 1967 nickel in some bank rolls. Both were found in the US. I was thrilled.

fastback13, are you in Canada? I've been thinking about finding a Canadian partner to trade circulation finds with.

YES kestrelia I am in Canada. I would be very interested in doing trades and since the CDN dollar is almost at par with the US dollar it will be even easier than it once was... Are you just interested in coins or banknotes as well? You can always email me a list of the types of things you are looking for and I can keep my eyes open. I also do regular brick searching of banknotes directly from the Bank of Canada so I deal mostly with uncirculated crisp notes. That is what I specialize in but do have a lot of coin but strictly CDN. But to get started in US coins would be interesting. Let me know and I'm sure we can work something out that works for the both of us. FASTBACK13
