looking at it,it I get the impression it is a worn away 24. I sure don't see a second 2 there. I would pass if you are thinking of bidding.

Never buy key or semi-key coins unseen, especially off of ebay. We had Brian Fanton come to our coin club meeting last week to give a talk on Counterfeit Detection--he specifically spoke about the 22 D. Bryan |

As with most ebay pictures, it's impossible to tell. The last 2 on the plain is typically weak, you can barely see it on mine, in fact, you have to tilt the coin just right to make it out. That and it's a crappy looking 2. I'd certainly ask for a better picture before bidding. |

Looks completely fake to me. Frankly I would stay away from anything not certified by one of the big four.

I cropped the date and boosted the contrast a little. I wasn't able to blow it up as large as I would have liked, but this definitely looks like a 1924.  |

I emailed the seller and here is the response I got..
"Anyone who knows coins could look at that image -- never even having to look at the date -- and know it was die #1 1922 cent. Even the distorted second 2 is normal. No other Lincoln has those die characteristics of any date. And by the way, the 4 in a 1924 cent of any mint is CLOSED not open."
I guess the seller is just blind. I asked if they used a magnifing glass to look at it.

Ok, Going against the grain here. I do believe that the coin in question is a 22 Die 1.
Reason:
The phantom 4 that we see in the blowups. Its in the wrong position and tilted.
There are 3 die pairs attributed to the 1922. They are as follows.
Die Pair #1: Weak Reverse
Second 2 in date is weaker than the first 2.
First T in TRUST is smaller and more distinct
than the other letters.
WE is very mushy.
Reverse is very weak, usually with no lines in the wheat ears.
Die Pair #2: Strong Reverse
Second 2 in date is sharper than the first 2.
All letters in TRUST are sharp.
WE is only slightly mushy.
L in LIBERTY butts up against the rim.
Reverse is sharp.
Die pair #3: Weak Reverse
Second 2 in date is weaker than first 2.
TRUST is weak but sharper than IN GOD WE.
L in LIBERTY butts up against the rim.
Reverse is weak -- lower left part of O in ONE begins to
spread into the field as the die deteriotates.
Thus my opinion. I say Die Pair #1.
Now, would I be sure enough of my opinion to bid on this coin? Pass...

Well, I held off bidding, based on responses here & it sold for $129.50. A great price - if it's real.

True a great price if real. However, the first thing I would have done with it would be to send it in for authenticating. If it came back as not a 22Plain, I would be out even more money. Just not worth the risk with ebay. |
