Just a another aspect of collecting..
Over the weekend I decided on a 1908 Indian Head 1/2 Eagle. It's circulated, probably VG+ or better.
This is just my first, I'm going to select more. Maybe a nice seated or bust half will be next.

Wow, excellent choice.
It puts my holed Franklin and my Adams dollar to shame.

I still tote around an Ike dollar. People can't believe that it is an actual coin. I am still amazed at how surprised folks are when they see/hold it.

I have a silver dollar the my grandfather carried. It is worn almost completely smooth, even the edge is smooth.

This is NOT an attempt to promote our sales, but you have to take a look at this one. Mike and I think it was probably rotary sanded! At this point, it's really only good as a pocket piece, but it has loads of character! 1811 Capped Bust Half

The 1908 half eagle is a great pocket piece! Throw some other coins in with it so that it feels at home.
Yesterday I saw what was the ugliest of all pillar dollars at Harlan Berk, an 1806 if I remember correctly. Shiny as a rear view mirror, with what looked like heat discoloration. It was $20, guaranteed up and down to be authentic, and would have made a good pocket piece - but I've already got plenty and don't like them that big.

I wonder what that Morgan would grade? Does it go Poor 1? It is a few rubs away from being a silver slug. There is something endearing about it though. Jim

Is this a coin collecting tradition to have a pocket piece?

I'm not sure if it's a tradition. I just like to carry cool stuff around with me.

No TPG would grade it because, since there is no date, it is unidentifiable.

I think SGS would grade this one F-12.

I make a real great attempt to not carry any change of any kind. As few keys as possible and not much else. Just an old age thing.
