The Secretary of the Treasury shall mint and issue, in quantities sufficient to meet public demand...................part of US Code..Title 31>Subtitle IV>Chapter 51> Subchapter II

Yes they do. For example Germany has the following mints....Berlin, Munich, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe and Hamburg.

Canada has two mints. The Winnipeg branch of the Royal Canadian Mint produces circulation coins. Ottawa produces collector coins.

As for Europe, the Monnaie de Paris (France) has two locations - one in Paris, one in Pessac near Bordeaux. But I think the coins are now all made in Pessac; Paris is where the engravers work and where medals are produced. However, the Monnaie de Paris uses only one mint mark anyway. Germany has four (state operated) mints, and five minting facilities. Karlsruhe and Stuttgart are two locations of the Baden-Württemberg mint but use different mint marks. On the other hand, several EU mints also produce coins for other member states. Either because those others have no mint, or because production is shared. Now as for Asia, China (the BPMC) has four minting facilities, I think: Shanghai, Shenyang, Nanjing and Shenzhen. Don't know if/what mintmarks are used there though ... Christian

@Peter THOMAS: "BPMC" is the China Banknote Printing and Minting Corporation. http://www.cbpmc.com.cn/english.htm@Lucky_13: Basically yes, except that the letters used are not abbreviations of the city names but rather leftovers of a "serial" system. Christian

HMMM. Good questions. I was wondering now that there is the Euro stuff in Europe, why would there have to be anything minted in each country. I would think they would have consolidated the Mints to produce only one type of monitary system. This would be logical to control the amount of money produced. As to our monitary system I really don't think our government has any idea of how much coinage is required. A good example is the abundance of the baby sized dollars in bulk quantities sitting in the banks that no one wants. Yet the Mint keeps on producing more and more and more of them. Guess they too need the overtime.

Thanks for answering the questions everyone. I have a little bit more knowledge then before. As for mintage determination. I dont see why they would need well over half as many Connecticuts than Wisconsin.

There is still the matter of local pride. Although the Euro coins can be used in any country, the coins that each country produce still have designs for that country.
