Yep, I learned a lesson. I went with the very low cost albums to place my coins in, and now am in the process of getting the "good stuff" that really protects my babies! Advice to a newby--go with the good albums.

What albums had you been using and what are you switching to? Just curious. I use Dansco and Intercept Shield.

Thanks,

Jim

I would say that it depends on your coins condition. I, too, am considering using something beside the Whitman. For my collection of circulation coins, it is OK.

Best wishes-

I have been using Dansco albums for almost twenty-five years now. About half of them are that old, while the "youngest" is right at nine years ( Statehood Quarters). About twelve years ago, I replaced the binders on three of them (but the pages are original) because I was not so kind to them in the beginning like I am now. All said, they have held up great!
Rest in Peace

First 35 years of collecting I used Whitman, and they are fine. Last 15 years I have used nothing but Dansco.

Do a forum search for Chief Coins. I have bought many used Dansco albums from them for $10-$15.

I have heard alot about Dansco albums, and would definitely use them, the more involved and valuable my collection gets.

Also, by Whitman, are you meaning the $3.00 3 fold?

John,

No. No folders unless you don't care about the coins. First, you only get to see one side. Second, the paper is not great and even brand new folders will tone your coins in an unattractive way. Third, there are no slides to protect the exposed side of the coin. And lastly, you will kill your fingers or your coins trying to get them in. By Whitman I think everyone is referring to their "Classic" album series.

Thanks,

Jim

I am talking about the albums John, I had some of the folders and had trouble getting the coins pressed in. I also don;t like the fact that you can't see the reverse. The Whitman Classic Albums are blue screw post binders. They look and work great.

The collections I have that were my dad's--lincolns are in the Whitman classic blue with screw post and then his many nickel albums are the Dansco. I, being an uneducated collector, saw the lower costing tri-fold Whitmans and thought I was in heaven--ordered numerous ones. They'll be okay to put the collections in from the loose lincolns that I want to give to all of my dad's grandchildren (9) to get them interested in collecting, but for my collections I want to go with the Dansco. Anybody know where to get adeal on them?

For brand new albums I would check Trade Winds coin and stamp supply. They have the albums and slipcases and you can get a discount for buying them together. I have found them to be fast and have the lowest prices on new albums:

You can check ebay and might find them for less. Also, Magusxxx mentioned Chief Coins for used albums. I have not had any dealings with them though.

I have had good luck with ebay (but watch the shipping charges) and also if you have a subscription to Coin World, you get a membership in AmosAdvantage which has good prices on albums as well. Another good place to check is https://www.brooklyngallery.com. Their prices are pretty good.
