Poll Question
I recentl purchased a 1938-D half dollar on ebay certified by ANACS in G-4 condition, for only $75. The Red Book value is $120, did I get a bargin?

Poll Choices
 Definately a good price.
 Average price.
 Obviously a bad price.

I was about to vote thinking that $120 was what he paid and I would have to look at the Red Book or other source to find the value. I need to slow down!

The last three relevant sales from Heritage Auctions, all in the last month:

ANACS VG-10 $83.95
NGC G-4 $74.75
ANACS VG-10 $80.50

So, if the price for your coin was under $80, then I'd say you got a decent deal. That $120 should get you something near VF25 in an ANACS slab. They're not all that scarce; Heritage has already auctioned 35 of them this year.

I voted "definitely good price". Considering all that can go wrong, from bidding frenzies to not winning the bid at all, I think it is a good deal anytime you can get something at auction for a "normal" price.

I voted average price. Of course you failed to mention if this was the entire price. If you paid postage, handling, insurances, etc. you may well have paid to much. If the coin in fact is G-4, that too makes a difference. Way to many individuals say G-4 and the coin is AG-3 and occationally even a higher grade. So let us know the total amount paid and when you get it the REAL grade.

Jermey, just carl was just pointing out that grading is often subjective; that the coin may have been slabbed as G-4, but might actually be AG-3. There is a saying you will see here a lot: "buy the coin, not the slab." That is, when possible, grade the coin yourself and pay accordingly, no matter what the slab says.

i agree the slab doesn't help me value the coin more...my dealer says its better to let someone else "pay" for the grading and then work from there as to whether or not you agree with the grade...i haven't tried this technique but it seems to make sense..

$99.95 for a fine grade on Dave's site.

I just ran a quick check of my last 6 purchases on ebay. I could have bought the same items at Dave's for less than half the price I paid on auction. Ahhhh, the hard lessons a newbie has to learn.
