This is the first SBA dollar I've gotten in change in probably 10 years. This is actually the first I've looked at since taking an interest in coins, and I'm having some issues.
The Red Book lists 1979S as well as filled and clear S Proofs. This looks, to me, like a filled S. But does that make this a proof coin? Or do I have a filled S for general circulation? or do I have a die chip on the mint mark?
The bottom of the mark looks like an "S". The top is blob-like.
A little help would go a long way towards starting me off on the right foot with this hobby.
Thanks!

The filled S, or Type 1, dollars were on all San Fran circulation strikes and some proofs. The clear S, or Type 2, were only on some proofs. Just based on the portion of the coin I can see I think you have a circulation strike.

Thanks,

Jim

Neff, San Fransico made both circulating and proofs in 1981. Most filled mintmarks look rectangular and filled in both loops. I don't know if it's the angle of your picture or is the 3rd star up smaller with one long point and the rest shorter? Breen does list a varity for that and I believe it is on the proof coin. If it's a proof, you should be able to tell by placing it next regular coin. Surface area will be much smoother and shinyer. Photo isn't clear enough for me to really form a good opinion.
