I would think such a contrast would be normal. I have no experience with these at all, but the sharpness would suggest at least EF to me. If genuine, and I suppose it is, it is most appealing.

It has AU sharpness, but there are some issues.

First that are some rim dings, which would pull the net grade down to EF.

Second, I think that the coin has been recolored. It think that it was cleaned at one time and that someone darkened the fields, perhaps with something like suphur. That is part of the reason why the features are bright and the fields are darker.

It's a nice example of the piece that is worth "a price." The price should be a quite a bit below the AU grade.

I posted a picture of a Massachusetts cent in very choice AU some time ago. I won't post here, because I don't want to steal your thread. You can look it up, however.

How accurate is the actual color of the coin relative to the photograph?
Seems digitally altered to me.

I don't know what you budget is, but it seems as if you have thousands of dollars at your disposal. My strategy has been to buy mostly really nice coins over a long period of time. I'll show you this one, which cost me a bit more than the AU price you quoted, but it's an impressive item. I'm just giving this as advice, not a directive.

The possible recoloring is well demonstrated by Bill's example.
