Half Dollar Coins And Etc. - Coin Community Forum

JET New Member United States 2 Posts	Posted 11/28/2005 1:30 pm Just found some old coins in my father's estate and among them are 2 US half dollar coins as follows: Booker T Washington 1946 with BTW portrait on one side, United States of America on top, Booker T Washington on the bottom, the word 'half dollar stamped on left side of portrait and E Pluribus Unum stamped on the right side of the portrait. On reverse it has a pic of a log cabin and hall of fame with the inscription "From slave cabin to Hall of Fame'. In God We Trust and Frankiln County VA also stamped on the coin. Another coin is United States of America on top, a portrait in the middle ( I don't know who it is), and on the bottom 'Columbian Half Dollar'. On the reverse 'World's Columbian Exposition Chicago 1893' with a pic of Columbus' ship (I'm assuming), the date 1492 and below two images of the earth. I also have some Two Cent Pieces 1864,1867,1865,1868, and an 1869 Three Cent Nickel. Can anyone give me any information on these coins? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Both of the coins that you have described are commemorative Half dollars, I'm hesitant to post a value ,without a look at the coins ,Condition is everything , the second coin or columbian commemorative ranges from about 15 dollars to several hundred dependant upon condition. Both coins look to be in decent condition, i.e. slightly tarnished (if that's the correct word to use)and not much wear on the coins overall. Sorry I don't have a scanner or I would post pics. Metalman Pillar of the Community United States 7123 Posts	Posted 11/28/2005 2:16 pm The Booker T as a single coin, ranges from around 10 dollars in circulated grades, to around 50.00 in UNC grades, keep in mind that these values can and do fluctuate with silver and collector interest. The 1869 Three Cent Nickel needs to be checked for an over date 9/8,, this coin carries a good premium in grades F-12 to UNC ranges a couple of Hundred to several hundred, sorry I cant be more specific, but without pics, I'm afraid a range is about all that can be given. The 2 cent coins 1867 should be checked for a double die variety,, all of the dates listed in lower grades are about the same around 15 bucks as a high retail in G-4 to 50 bucks in EF condition, it is above the EF grade where some gain value rather quickly. Metalman Pillar of the Community United States 7123 Posts	Posted 11/28/2005 2:23 pm Thought I should add this warning !!! do not clean any of the coins ,and when handling them with bare hands only by the rims . since I do not know the condition better safe than sorry, cleaning and finger prints are very damaging when it comes to value !! Susanlynn9 Forum Mom United States 5877 Posts	Posted 11/28/2005 7:17 pm Welcome to the forum! The 2-cent coins can range in value from around $15 (Good G4) to around $50 (Extremely Fine EF40). The key to the condition on these coins is whether WE is visible on the obverse ribbon. The 1864 has two different varieties...the large and small motto. The small motto is much more valuable than the large motto. The 3-cent ranges from $10 (Good G4) to around $30 (Extremely Fine EF40). If you are able to post pics, we can help you more.
