Hey everyone. I'm new to coin collecting here so bear with me.

I bought an imperial roman denarius (Trajan) that looked awesome on eBay. I wanted to find some history on when the coin was minted via wildwinds, but I can't seem to find the coin on there! It seems like the placement of the wings and cornucopia do not match any of the other coins for this emperor/text combo.

The coin is certified and graded by NGC. I've checked the registration on their websites and the images there match the coin I have in hand.

Could this be a fake?

I see what you mean. The deity on the reverse doesn't match either RIC54 or RIC79.

It's not leaping out at me as a forgery, so I'm going to assume it's not and that you've found a variant. Let's see what the others think.

It does look very similar to RIC 64. My only concern is the cornucopia placement is lower on mine. Between the M-P whereas on the sample there it is near the R. Can small details like that be different legitimately?

Nice early Trajan, honors date the coin to 100 AD.

Its just a different die, + since all the dies were handmade.. Coins from different dies can vary quite a bit.

Thanks everyone for the help!

I really like the coin and the legibility of the text. It's pretty cool holding a [very] little piece of history.
