I just heard from a dealer friend that a large business interest is buying up Lincoln 1909 cents to sell as some kind of centennial set in 2009. From what he said, they're really going to mass-market this set and quite possibly tie up availability of the lower circulated grades. By extension, I imagine this will exert price pressure on the higher grade 09s as well. This would be the time to buy this coin, before Mr. Lincoln gets imprisoned in leatherette folders for who knows how long?

That makes sense... I can't believe what's happened to VDB's in the last couple of years. I picked up 2 bright Red MS64 VDB's about 10 years ago for ~$20 each. I can't believe what they're selling for now. Makes me glad I got them when I did for my set and 7070.

Just about all Lincolns are going up, take a look at the gray sheet, most of the dates have + signs next to them (for those that do not know, that means the price has increased since last month)

I'm sure you're right--I actually don't have the Grey Sheet here, but I'll check today.

I have not heard of a run up happening as of now but it makes sense with the new issue of the five dollar note, next years mint release of four different penny's. Also the constant clatter of the price to make a cent, 1.2 cents and the fact that zinc and copper will never go down in price. in fact people are already sounding the pennies death bell. the talk is to make them of ceramic's,teflon, carbon fiber etc.
As far as price goes,in 8/07 the price of a gem bu full red 1909-P,VDB
in Ken Pines Coast to Coast coins monthly was $39.00. in 4/08 it was unchanged, today that price still holds. It may well be a good idea to snag those cents you've been meaning to get because after next year or sooner you may not get another chance to get them at a bargain.
Keep collecting..until your wife screams! Scott
