Hi All,
I have a roll of (what looks to me) BU 1958-D Lincoln cents. I'm going through them looking for varieties but I noticed something: although they're nice and shiny, most have weird spots on them. Does this indicate they were cleaned? I can't find anything anywhere on this. Any pointers?
Also, what are the best sites to see pictures of different Lincoln varieties?
Thanks!

Coppercoins has a TON of varieties on it (excellent site!). Are there any others? I have a couple with lines on Lincoln's vest that look the same, and a couple with what looks like extra metal hanging off the 1's in the date.

I agree about the photos. Does it look like the roll is original bank wrap , or one that has been gone through and "compiled"? If it looks original, than more likely it was a part of the cleaning process in the mint before striking, rather than cleaning after.

I'm trying to get photos of both the spots and the hanging metal, and vest scratches. It's not a bank roll, it was in a plastic one (for collectors?). The spots remind me of oily residue you sometimes see on puddles or still water. Here are a couple I managed to get last night; I'm still trying to get the rest: A couple spots on this one, small piece of metal above the 9, plus the 5 and 8 have marks: More spots on here, and is that a Cud to the left of Liberty? Thanks!

Here's more pictures.. you can see spots on most of these as well. 1. Scratches on the vest area directly next to a black dot (dot added to aid locating). I wouldn't have thought anything of it except there are two that have the exact same scratches: 2. Cud on lower rim? I thought Cuds were unique per coin, but this one is on 2 coins, same exact spot: 3. Letters look crunchy: 4. Metal on the I in LIBERTY. There are 2 with metal hanging from the 1 in the date the same way: 5. ST in TRUST squished. There are other coins I haven't taken pictures of with other letters that are squished - the TY in LIBERTY, etc. Thanks for looking at these. Do these indicate varieties in and of themselves, or are they just used as markers when you have a double die to see which one it is?

the 4th one like it has a die gouged mint mark. I has a roll a lot clean that the one's you post I have earlier with the same type strike and I was told they we normal strikes by CC&FIR so what can I say? but the 4th one looks like a gouged M/M.

Yes..thanks.. I kind of figured the strikes themselves were normal. I was more interested about how to tell varieties from these, and about the spots. A gouged mint mark is interesting, too
