Hello. Newby here.

I'm not a coin collector but I decided that I needed to get some knowledge about this penny collection that's been sitting under my bed for some time. So, here I am.

I inherited a penny collection that someone has put a ton of time into. This collection is pretty large (to me anyway) and is very detailed. There's a briefcase and two money bags full of rolled pennies. Every individual roll has the same year penny in it and every roll is dated. The dates are from 1900's to 1960's. They're even separated into 19XX D and 19XX S. This fellow also documented this collection in a log. In the briefcase there is a magnify lens and a small wire brush for cleaning the pennies. There are also two old coin collection books in the case.

I know absolutely nothing about coin collections but I thought that I may as well as you folks if there is any value in a collection such as this before I cash it in at the bank.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
-Will

Sounds like a very nice roll collection, take a look at ebay's completed auctions for rolls to get an ideal of what they may be worth. Post some of the specific dates and we can give you an ideal also. The wire brush sounds a bit scary, do not try to clean the cents it may take some of the value away. What kind of condition are the cents in? Are they shinny or brown? Some of the earlier dates especially the "S" and "D" will bring in some good money.

I hope not. FYI cleaning coins is a no-no.

Is there any chance you could scan and post the list of coins?

Never clean coins, ever, by any method!
ESPECIALLY A WIRE BRUSH!

If he cleaned all the coins with a wire brush, then they
are likely junk. Sorry. That is hopefully not the case though.

You have the potential to have some really nice stuff
there... At least better than face or melt value. At
best, you might have a roll of key dates!

It could swing wildly either way and will require research
to determine. If you just want to get what you can for them
and don't care if you get less than optimum value, take them
to a local dealer.

Good luck!

AKKK! please don't use the wire brush on those cents, it will ruin them forever, if the guy did so before you received them they are ruined also so please tell us the brush is just in there and has never been used

I'll take a look at ebay. I can get the exact date when I get home. I can say that just about every year is in the collection. From the few rolls that I opened up to have a look inside, most of the coins are in I guess what would be called circulated condition and most are brown; few are shinny. The small brush has either brass or copper bristles and I would assume was used to clean the grim off of the really dirty pennies.

I really don't have any interest in collecting coins. But I do respect other people's interests and seeing how this fellow has obviously put many years of work into this collection I really don't like to see the collection get separated. At the same time I really don't have any need for this collection. I do know that the collection is old; 30+ years and the copyrights of the books suggest such.

First of all........

........EVERYONE is agreed about the wire brush !!......
Hopefully the "fellow" just cleaned his briefcase with it and NOT the coins !!...
Maybe it was his dog's brush or something...let's hope !
There's always a few who will "clean coins" in solutions and stuff.......but this is the first I've EVER heard about somebody with a "wire brush".....OMG !....Yeah...you don't want to do that.....(i think chills went up my spine when I read this !
NO MATTER HOW DIRTY OR GRIMEY A COIN IS......A WIRE BRUSH WILL NEVER BE YOUR SOLUTION FOR IT !
If this has happened with some or all of "these" coins......then each one that has been "brushed" will be worth only face value...

Don't cash these in at the bank. The 1909 -1958 are wheat backs that can be sold for $1.50 a roll to most dealers (more to collectors). Anything before 1909 are Indian heads worth about 50 cent a piece to dealers (more to collectors). As mentioned before there are some key date coins that can be worth a lot more.

Seeking: More Info. on your coins

Yeah.....as mentioned......there is a potential of some really decent value here !...absolutely !.....in fact once you've reached 50 posts on THIS forum......you could sell them right here probably !......You could put some pics of what you have up here....(hopefully with some relieved assurances that a wire brush WASN'T used on any coin though!!)

lol.ok.I can understand why the brush would be a no no. However, I do know that the coins that I have seen or can see are not scratched up or even look like the surface of the coins have been scraped or polished with a brush. So maybe the brush was used for something else. I dunno.

I'll get you all some pics and more details this weekend.

Even if this collection is only worth face value, I sure would feel better passing it over to a collector that would appreciate this mans work as a whole. I feel that time spent is more gratifying than bought time.

I really appreciate the help so far.

Great !....be looking forward to seeing em' !
The Wheat head penny is dated 1909 to 1958 as Rainman said.......and those, in average old condition, sell for at least 4 - 5 times their face value.
But if you have some "key dates"......some pennies are worth HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS FOR ONE COIN !......the popular and very expensive 1909 "S" VDB is one !.......so RAINMAN is absolutely right !...Please don't take anything to the bank...
One more thing......we like the stories that come along with collections acquired.....so this "fellow" and his parted collection is intriguing as well.....do tell please !
