Is it worth paying $40 shipping insurance on your resent gold coin purchase.

the regular shipping is $25, but they want $40 more for the insurance. Is this an option or a must.

Thoughts and your past experiences in receiving your online gold coin purchases. How you ever not received your items, if so did the insurance cover it or was it a hassle. Basically was the insurance worth it.

Question to you, will the sender have it noted as "insured" on the package? I'm a former mail carrier. Postal Employees and crooks know what that designation means. The contents are well over $50. Carriers have been known to scarf packages but it usually disappears at a distribution facility along the way, many different hands. It it worth it? Who's liable, you or sender. If sender is CYA, for a high$ item, it is his right. Should have read sellers fine print prior to sale, maybe? This is the wrong time to send high$ items w/o insurance.

If the seller doesn't have a shining reputation to protect, declining the insurance add-on is a free pass for them to say "told you so!" if it just never shows up.

Its from a auction house and they deal with a small courier company in the area. I have received other items from them in the past, with out insurance and with out issues. I guess because this package has a gold coin in it over $500 value, they decided that it was necessary. I guess the time of year doesn't help as the amount of shipments must have quadrupled.

Burnz, yes the season IS the reason, carriers, couriers, delivery services all hire or use all their temp personnel, many hands, many sticky fingers, sadly. Last Christmas I was working, had a substitute carrier that liked to steam open those nicely advertised Grandma cards and remove the cash(only). He was escorted from the floor in handcuffs in January!

Shipping Insurance dilemma

If you pay with paypal, you are protected, and it is not necessary to pay extra.
At $25.00 shipping is already Registered Mail .

I've never lost a package, coming or going, in 35 years of heavy use of the US postal service. Tens of thousands of packages.

If you bought from them, you must trust them. If not, buy your gold at shows or LCS.

This happened to my son this past July. Grandparents sent a birthday card with $75 cash in it. Someone at the postal service opened the card and swiped the cash. Got the card though. Nothing was done nor could we find out who/where it happened.

No. First off $65 delivery is ridiculous unless you're talking about several ounces of gold. Second, it is the seller's responsibility to deliver the item to you safely. If you are buying from a seller that does not include this implicit requirement then look elsewhere.

I have never lost a package or shipment to or from my location(s) in my life. I primarily deal with domestic shipments within the U.S.

I have lost one which I sent untracked. But truth be told the communication about the lost package frpm the buyer seemed sketchy. I believe he actually received it and didn't like the fact that I sent it untracked. Long story short, I refunded the money and blocked the buyer from future transactions because I now had a good idea how much he valued his integrity.

I have had only a few packages dissapear, always during the holiday season, out of perhaps a hundred. I now ship valuable personal packages only to work for family, and always insure and track.

Would that be worth $45 on a gold coin to me? It depends - for an ounce or more, almost certainly.

Unless there is something specific in the terms that you agreed too insurance is to protect the seller not the buyer. If it gets stolen then you would get a refund. Offering insurance is really just a way for them to make more money

Now if they do actually have language in the agreement that it is up to you to purchase insurance otherwise if it's stolen you are out of luck I would never buy from them again.

Update, so the total shipping was $40.95, $25 for shipping and $14 for insurance. I later asked if the insurance was an option, they said yes it was.
Although the way the email was worded kind of suggested otherwise.

Email I received:
(Yes we have 2 lots for paddles 4263 & 5236 to ship to you.
It is $25+GST to pack and ship; $14+GST extra to insure. Your total charge is $40.95.)

I've had mid 4 figure packages sent in US that hasn't cost what you are being asked to pay. Even the big boys such as Heritage and Stacks don't charge anywhere near that much for several thousands of dollars packages.

If you are buying bullion you need to find a new supplier.
