1989-D Penny Worth $3,000..!!

" Some old pennies are worth more than others, and in the case of a rare 1989-D penny, it's worth much, much more!

Circulation-strike 1989 pennies are typically made of a copper-plated zinc composition. Many 1982 pennies and all business-strike pennies made since 1983 are supposed to be made from that zinc composition.

However, there have been a few hiccups in the metal composition of Lincoln pennies since 1982 — when the United States Mint transitioned from making 95% copper pennies to 97.5% zinc pennies.

Apparently, a few 1989-D pennies were accidentally minted on pre-1983 95% copper planchets (prepared coin blanks)".

Is this real..?

I know there are 1983 pennies minted in the copper composition. But I never heard of 1989 pennies.

In my country no one care about collecting coins but I can find places like silver maintains keeping thousands of old coins.
They don't care about the coins they have in their shops.. They put them all in one box.
I found there many silver dollars ... All the USA coins.
And more then 40 countries coins.
The highes price for a USA silver dollar is 4 or 5 us dollars.
I brought some of these coins like 1989-D, 1891 o solve dollar.
The problem is I am not familiar with the rare , error and the expensive coins.. So that I am here to learn ..

The story may be real but GET REAL, I quote the aforementiond CoinWorld article:

Quote:
At Stack's Bowers Galleries' Aug. 11 Rarities Night sale, the firm offered the only known 1989-D Lincoln cent struck on a pre-1983 planchet, graded Mint State 65 red by Professional Coin Grading Service

Don't get overly excited "THE ONLY KNOWN...", does it mean more, as much a chance as for any other date.

Thanks for the info and post. I just bought a scale for the purpose of differentiating the copper cent from zinc cent. Now I have another reason to use it (re:1983's).

Helmi7, This is a good place. I've been learning a lot over the past month. People really know their stuff here. You will find that people will actually take the time to explain things out for you if you request this from them.

Even if they don't care about coins they almost assuredly know about silver, weight and silver value. If they are selling you silver dollars that should have about $13 worth of silver in them to you for $5 something is probably very wrong. Most likely they are selling base metal fakes. Check the weight on the coins you bought. They should be close to 26.73 grams.

Conder, the op's estimate is probably close to be correct considering the value of the US currency versus Yemen's.

He says they are selling for 5 US dollars (that would be 1,250 Rial) Silver value would still be 3,250 rial. So if they are selling coins with a silver value of 3,250 rial for 1,250 Rial there is still something wrong.
