I recently received a New Mexico State Quarter in change and both my husband (and his sister) and I couldn't help but notice how light (in color and in weight) it seemed compared to other newer quarters. The quarter itself looks like it's the same thickness as other quarters, it just seems like there is more zinc then typical in it. Did the US Mint change the metal content of the quarter or is it something in our imagination? I was wondering if anyone else noticed this with the new, New Mexico quarters too.

Quarters have never contained zinc. They are Cu-Ni clad(outer layers 0.75 copper, 0.25 nickel) with an inner core of pure copper.

The New Mexico quarter should be the exact same weight and composition as all the other clad quarters. If you have a single or very few of them, I'd suggest getting them weighed on a scale that reads to tenths of a gram or better yet, hundredths of a gram. The official weight is 5.67 grams. If yours is significantly off this weight then you have a very interesting find there.

There are 2008 New Mexico State Quarters struck in 90% silver but these are for mint sets only - Not for circulation. A 90% silver quarter weighs 6.25 grams and would likely be lighter in color as you describe.

Although it's unlikely a silver one was removed from a set, check the reeding on the edge for a copper band. If there's no band - You just made a quick $3!

Just to correct one thing that Bherring added, the silver quarters are only available in US silver proof sets not the US mint sets.
Rest in Peace

I just did some of my own, nothing out of the norm;

(3)New Mexico 5.7
(1)Arizona 5.7
(1)Oklahoma 5.7
(1)1998 5.7

All mine seem consistent, so if you can get a weight on yours, that would be of help!
Rest in Peace
