I bought both a 1962 and 1964 proof set each sealed in the original manila-looking envelope. I would love to see the coins inside them but will they be worth less if I open the envelope? The return address on the envelope says Treasury Department, United States Mint, etc and the lower left of the envelopes say 1962 P.C. and 1964 P.C.

Any advice?

I've bought multiple 1964 proof's and open them. (Remember they are in plastic in the envolope) You never know what you will find. 1 time out of 100 it's great. So you have to choose between resale or finding the gold! And if you paid a low rate its worth its melt value!

The resale value is only because its sealed. An the person buying it hopes that this is the one. Opened has the same value as any other proof set. (Except if it the good one)

Many of the original mint set envelopes were never sealed even though the envelopes were gummed. Time and humidity can cause them to seal all by themselves. Sets with damaged envelopes frequently have them replaced with modern reproductions. IMO a sealed envelope is nothing but a detriment since you cannot see the condition of the coins at all. Who really wants to risk the chance of selling a nice cameo set under value but never knowing because the envelope is sealed? This is a running scam on ebay to make people think that they actually have a chance to get a cameo set but in reality the seller knows exactly what you are getting and it won't be cameo coins

Please educate me on proof sets being "special". If the 1962 is worth around $13, how much would it be worth in cameo?

Thanks for the info. I did not pay much for them so either way I would not be out much. I opened them and they appear to be very nice coins. I may look at rolling the dice and getting the Franklin slabbed. I am pretty new to this and consider it a learning process. This forum is great help for that.
