I am new to the community and interested in starting a collection of commemorative half dollars. It seems there are a lot of fake commemoratives floating around. What are some good techniques for spotting these? Perhaps this has been discussed in detail in a previous post.

Many fake commems have been posted and discussed here - you might try entering different terms in the Search feature. Perhaps the most important aid is to compare a prospective purchase with a good photo of a certified example, looking for crude and weak detail discrepancies.

If you show us photos, we can help.

Or make it really simple and buy NGC or PCGS examples.

If it's shipping from China, and the price is too good to be true... I bought a Texas half by mistake late one night, total fake, but cool to add to the collection.

I'd say if you're buying raw coins only buy from a reputable dealer.
