ICCS may not be “recognized “ in the US as a TPG. Then WHY do most of the better ICCS pieces I sell end up in the States?
As to membership in PCGS and NGC.......why not join the ANA and then you have direct submission privileges with NGC , plus you have joined a great organization and you get a wonderful copy of The Numismatist magazine every month.
One further item .... YES it does cost a minimum of 80 to a 100 CAD to send just a single coin to PCGS from Canada depending on level of service and value. Breaks down like this .The shipping both ways is 50 CAD ( Expresspost to USA , Insured Register return from USA ) single coin Certification between 39 to 56 CAD plus the neat little charge of 11 CAD or so for the invoice paperwork .
Years back I sent in Three Barber coins via J&M ( Joe did it as a Favour) , final cost to me $165 CAD.

Recognition of ICCS is not a problem among high-end American collectors of Canadian material. But the best stuff inevitably gets cracked out and sent to PCGS for Registry purposes, TrueViews, better holders, better liquidity among less knowledgeable collectors, etc. For coins grading $500 and up, $50-$75 dollars per coin isn't an outrageous amount of money for the services PCGS provides. Not to mention some of us believe they are more competent graders (copper, problem coins, authenticity, consistency at Mint State levels, soft strikes).

Because those collectors either are Canadians stationed in the US or more likely, these are the very astute American collectors who are aware of the importance of ICCS in Canada and also realize, if they were ever to sell their Canadian coins, they would get the most by having an ICCS graded coin.

and THAT folks is the real reason why PCGS has surged in popularity for Canadian coins.

It's not for preference or for added profit, it's for the Registry set.

You have to admit, the person that thought of the Registry Sets was a pure capitalistic genius.

That is not quite true, although set collecting does encourage one to up each others, the big reason for higher value coins to reside in one of the top two TPG is the assurance guarantee. When you pay a grand or more for a coin, it's nice to have an opinion that's guaranteed.
