Sad News, I just found out that Karl Kohls, passed away last March in Las Vegas. Karl was the founder of the Shorewood Coin Shop. He was born and raised in Milwaukee, served in the Merchant Marine and the U. S. Army. He was a Prince among coin dealers. Young and beginning collectors were always welcome in his shop. He never missed an opportunity to pass along numismatic information, free copies of The Numismatist magazine and encouragement to his friends and customers even while on the job as an award winning bar tender at the Embers on East Kilbourn. After the harrowing experience of being held hostage at gun point during an armed robbery at the Embers, Karl moved to a "safer place" in Las Vegas as a bar tender at the MGM Grand from which he retired. While in Vegas he ran a weekend coin shop in an indoor flea market for many years. Karl will never be forgotten by those of us who have had the good fortune to have known him.

Really amazing of you to post that in his memory. It is very easy to be forgotten and never thought of again. Your post will immortalize his generosity and give a key to those who didn't know him of who he was.

Thanks TB. Karl was the only one in his family that liked coins. He never set up at any shows, was a proud ANA member but never went to local club meetings, didn't like to do mail order or advertise but just loved to run his shop and deal with people face to face. He never got on the internet which would have made life so much easier . Yet he was the best friend a collector could have.
