I have had this quarter for a few years. I pulled my coins out today to look at them. This is what I found on this one. What is it? How did it get there? What can I do about it? What should I do to prevent other coins from doing this? I had it stored in one of those card board 2x2 with the clear part in the center so you can see the coin.

Environmental damage because of where it was stored . Humidity, dampness excessive heat . I don't believe it was from the 2x2 that you used unless it was used before on another coin . It's a proof coin so there's not much you can do about ,if you try to remove that black you will further damage the coin .

Hmmm.. I bought it from a coin dealer in an antique mall this way. It has been stored in a bedroom closet. The closet itself doesn't have an a/c vent, but I wouldn't ever say my house has excessive heat...except once when the air conditioner was broke for about 2 days. Possibly it was starting to damage when I bought it and it is just now showing? Should I just spend it at face value and put it into circulation?

It's definitely Environmental Damage. I would still keep it, as long as it's still in Mint State condition.

Maybe it is time to get it in another type of holder to try and prevent a furthering of the black areas.

Thank you for your replies. What kind of protector would you recommend? I have been looking at different ones all night, and I more confused than ever. I don't mind spending a little extra money to do the job right and to have peace of mind. Suggestions?
