Try soaking a Q-Tip in acetone and see if it comes off.... looks like something on the surface to me...

Well...

SPP-OTTAWA, You were right . Some acetone and all disappeared .

I will retain this method, although the surface of the coin seems slightly altered ( maybe too much acetone...).

No,Pure Acetone does not harm the coin, the issue was with whatever was on the coin, if it was acidic it could have harmed the surface.

This is the only drawback of acetone cleaning, it will remove the gunk, but normally the coin under the gunk does not always look as nice as we hoped.
